I'm a fan of 4e, but I don't like that each class gains uniform hp. I want to make a system can cause character's with high con have high hp (more than just a couple points) compared to others in their class. I also realize that this will unbalance con in respect to other abilities, but I don't see a way around that

Anyway, my plan is to set a "typical" con and give bonuses only if it goes over this (for every 2 points). So it will look something like this (for PHB classes).

Leaders/strikers: 4 + 1 per every even numbered con point above 12. (14,16,18,20, etc)
Defenders: 5 + 1 per every even numbered point above 14
Wizards: 3 + 1 per every even numbered con point above 10

Does this sound fair?

Short answer: No

Long answer:
Axe/Hammer fighters will get a huge boost, while blade fighters lack more behind in durability than they already do.

Con based warlocks will totally rule.

Without stat booster items the hit point bonus to con damage simply does not work at 1 pt/level (You can argue that it didn't work pretty well in 3.5, too)

Also in 4e much more stats are important than in 3.5. So in your system, every build that benefits from con anyways becomes totally uber compared to the other builds.

If you have some char op oriented players in your group, they will create nearly unkillable characters.

And the players who make their characters for flavor will just be totally outshined by them.

If all your players are char optimizers, you will propably get a party made up of half elf warlocks, dwarven fighters and dwarven clerics.

You will have to improve monster hit points or damage to challenge these chars (I would recommend damage, otherwise battles may become really boring)

Bottom line:
This change will result in a totally different game.

Add Con prerequisite to Toughness. Done.

Remember, healing surges factor in how much total damage the character can take. Each +2 to Constitution gives an additional healing surge or +25% of your base hit point value to your daily total. That's a huge increase already. Increasing the benefit even more isn't really warranted.

Wow, that's smart!

I totally agree that if you really want Con to have more impact on HP that's the way to go.

I would suggest Con 13. Con 15 could result in a similar effect as stated above - just that you won't have to scale the monsters.

As others have said, this is an awful, awful, awful, extremely inbalancing, idea. Its bad enough that if a DM told me that it was a house rule for his game, I would probably wave goodbye and not play. You have just given high CON characters and builds not only more healing surges, but also more base hit points. That is a HUGE benefit, and its a pair of benefits that actually multiply each others usefulness. More total hit points means more hit points healed with a healing surge. More hit points healed with a healing surge means more total hit points that enemies must eat through in order to down a PC. Its a cyclical problem. Terrible. I urge you, do not do this to your games.

HP gained via higher Con will also be multiplied when you take into account healing surges as well. More HP means more healing from healing surges. This would make the HP + (Healing Surge x Number of Surges) be even higher for high Con characters as you go up in levels.

Yeah, I kinda so the imbalance of it, but I did not know it would be such a large issue.

Sounds like I won't be doing this afterall! Thanks guys.

Yep, that should work great.
