With my main campaign having essentially broken down to lack of interest in the game at that time, I ended up taking a bit of a vacation, and after a few months or so came up with an idea to get a game going without the commitment of making a world...a series of one-time single-session adventures.

The results have been excellent and brought a new kind of fun to the game.

The premise we have used has been to take a horror theme, and put together an adventure with a clear ending.

Our first game was a Dracula-based story (turned on its head, of course), of a vampire hunter who leads a party to a master vampire's castle, only to die at the steps, leaving the party trapped to deal with a hidden villain intent on making them his slaves.

The second game, I decided to do something different, starting with a "survival horror" theme, of characters hiding from a deadly enemy while trying to escape a town.  I ended up using War of the Worlds (the radio broadcast) as inspiration, deciding to run an alien invasion game within D&D.  To keep the mood and make it actually disturbing to the players, I did not inform anyone beforehand of what they were fighting, and in game I relied only on descriptions from the characters point of view.

This kind of game is good when you (as a DM) find yourself stuck in a rut, or want to do something new, or even to introduce someone to D&D for the first time.  Obviously, it cannot last too long (since they are single story games), and the cliches can run out, but any genre or idea can be tapped for an interesting game.  And like any other D&D game, who knows, if things go well enough, you might have an actual campaign branch out...

Reminds me of Call of Cthulhu. I only had one character ever survive a single session, and he was institutionalized. Good times, good times.

I had a rough quarter, and had to back down on the writing/DMing side of things. Finals are finally over, and I am writing a series of horror adventures that will take place in the mournland (eberron), and would appreciate if you have any other ideas for good haunted/horror/dark adventures.
