| #1the_storytellerOct 15, 2008 8:56:22 | (Edited after comments) Heroic Feats Bushido Benefit: You gain +1 feat bonus to damage rolls and AC when holding a bastard sword with two hands. Paragon Feats Completeness Prerequisites: Five abilities scores with 13 or higher Benefit: You gain a +1 feat bonus to Fortitude, Reflex, and Will defenses. Wounding Pick Prerequisites: Str 15, Con 15 Benefit: When you score a critical hit with a pick weapon the target take 5 ongoing damage (save ends). Epic Feats Epic Training Benefit: You gain a +1 ability point in one ability score that is not your highest ability. If more than one ability are the highest in points neither can receive this bonus. Legendary Fortitude Prerequisites: Str 21, Con 21 Benefit: You rolls twice the saving throw and take the highest result against effects originated by powers that target your Fortitude defense. Legendary Reflexes Prerequisites: Int 21, Dex 21 Benefit: You rolls twice the saving throw and take the highest result against effects originated by powers that target your Reflex defense. Legendary Will Prerequisites: Wis 21, Cha 21 Benefit: You rolls twice the saving throw and take the highest result against effects originated by powers that target your Will defense. The Bushido feat is for samurai-alike PCs / or just a reason for using bastard in two hands (only +1 damage… ugh). You can expand for all versatile weapons if you want. I don’t see any problem in this feat; it’s not broken in my opinion. Legendary Fortitude, Reflex and Will feats diminish in some degree the problem of increasing two abilities that contribute for the same defense. Wounding Pick is the missing feat for picks. Epic Training corrects the problem of ending (precisely in 28th level) with an odd number in an ability score that is not the highest. I have made a lot more feats (and others corrections/updates like the wizards’ wand of accuracy), but I have chosen to post only the ones that all my friends have approved. What do you think about them? |
| #2klaustheprinceOct 15, 2008 11:57:58 | Heroic Feats Broken. No feat gives uncoditional bonuses to attack rolls, ever. Paragon Feats Unobtainable. And broken if not so. Poison Pick Broken. Some of Talents Unobtainable. And more than broken if not. Epic Feats Dunno. Could work, indeed. Legendary Fortitude Don't know: they could work, but they smell of brokennes to me.
No. Seriously, no. |
| #3tafkamhokieOct 15, 2008 12:07:02 | Bushido - not situational enough. The one comparison out there is the feat that give a +1 attack bonus when using a light blade against opponents with combat advantage. +1 any time you use a bastard sword 2 handed is way too powerful. Completeness - If you use 22 point buy, it is probably unobtainable. If you use 6d6, reroll all 1's and 2's, drop the lowest three, then your defenses don't need a boost. Poison Pick - not too bad, but lose the save penalty. I REALLY dislike save bonuses and penalties. Modifying a saving throw willy-nilly breaks a very fundamental game mechanic. Some of Talents - Really bad...for all the reasons listed under Bushido and Completeness combined. Just looking at the overall power level of these feats, I think you are trying to create feats with a 3e power level instead of a 4e power level. In 3e, feats were a MAJOR power source for characters. In 4e, your class powers are your major power source. Feats are for rounding out your character or giving a tiny bonus in specific situations. Things like attack bonuses, save bonuses, and defense bonuses really should not be augmentable by feats outside of what is already provided in the PHB. |
| #4veritascitorOct 15, 2008 12:07:10 | I won't critique the feats, but just wanted to let you know that posts like this would be more at home on the House Rules forum. |
| #5MaxpersonOct 15, 2008 12:12:59 | Completeness - If you use 22 point buy, it is probably unobtainable. If you use 6d6, reroll all 1's and 2's, drop the lowest three, then your defenses don't need a boost. There ARE rolling methods that aren't stupidly broken, you know. Good old fashioned 4d6 take the best 3 still works wonders. |
| #6dogbackwardOct 15, 2008 12:30:59 | Er... just for the record; 14 (5 points) 14 (5 points) 14 (5 points) 14 (5 points) 12 (2 points) 8 (0 points) Level 11 bumps stats to 15, 15, 15, 15, 13, 9. At levels 4 and 8, add +1 to stat #5, and +1 to whatever else you want, getting, for example; 16, 16, 15, 15, 15, 9 Which means you could have both of the "X number of stats at 15" feats by 11th level, using the retraining rules. Yes, they're horribly broken, but not unobtainable, even using 22 point buy. Poison Pick doesn't seem too horrible, since saves can be so easy to succeed at, but I agree that you should remove the penalty to saves based on Con. Also, what is the connection between picks and poison? They don't seem to fit together naturally, so I don't see why you chose picks or poison specifically. Epic Training doesn't seem unbalanced, per se, but it does go against the seeming 4e "rule" of nothing adding to stats except levels. And perhaps an Epic Destiny or two. And the Legendary "X" feats are just barely too much. I'd change them to allow you to roll twice for any save against an effect that was against the defense, rather than auto-success. And I do agree that the other ones are far too powerful to be feats. |
| #7awesome_dudeOct 15, 2008 12:31:03 | Broken. Remind me to revoke your privileges for abuse of this word. No feat gives uncoditional bonuses to attack rolls, ever. The bonus is not unconditional, but the feat is still overpowered. Unobtainable. And broken if not so. Not unobtainable, and not broken. You see, you have to ability bonuses on scores that you would likely never use, thereby not only lowering your potential defenses, but also your attack rolls. I see no reason why anyone would even consider taking this feat instead of raising his main two ability scores. Broken. It is overpowered because of the save penalty. Remove that, and the feat is okay Unobtainable. And more than broken if not. Actually, if anyone spends their ability points to fulfill the prerequisites, then they actually have to take this feats to stay balanced. Dunno. Could work, indeed. It doesn't do a whole lot. Don't know: they could work, but they smell of brokennes to me. These actually are broken. Automatically saving? Hell no. No. Seriously, no. Umm... this one is actually worse than its prerequisite feat. Your dump stat? No longer a dump stat. A requirement to stay competent if you fulfill its prerequisites. |
| #8awesome_dudeOct 15, 2008 12:32:48 | Er... just for the record; You just proved why they are the worst feats ever. Any character that takes them will be behind all of his peers in terms of both attack rolls and defenses, even with these feats. |
| #9MaxpersonOct 15, 2008 12:47:31 | If you rolled up 5 15 scores (or better) you surely should not be boosted even more with such a feat. It's horribly horribly overpowered. As about any feat presented here... most of the feats are just way over the top. You aren't rolling up that many, though. The feat rewards you for spreading your stat raises around, rather than specializing in one or two massively good stats. |
| #10the_storytellerOct 15, 2008 12:52:53 | Wow... I'm the worst "feat maker" ever. I understand your point guys. Thanks for the comments. Editing... |
| #11the_storytellerOct 15, 2008 13:06:35 | Surely not worst. There are other things around... ;) Thanks Leichenreiter! |
| #12awesome_dudeOct 15, 2008 13:16:24 | Wow... I'm the worst "feat maker" ever. No, you're a far cry from being the worst. Some of the feats in the OP are simply, umm... redundant. They require you to spread your ability scores out and thus put you behind others of your level and so by taking them you end up in the same range, minus one feat (or three). I especially like the Poison Pick feat, and it needs only minor work to work properly in a standard game. |
| #13MaxpersonOct 15, 2008 13:20:05 | To The_Storyteller Another thing you can do, is just be up front with the players. The DM I play with currently likes to create feats, etc. for the game. He tells us that he's doing it this way for now, and if it turns out to be too strong, he's going to change it. Since we know in advance, we're okay with that. That way, you can use the feats you come up with and essentially playtest them. It allows you to not have to wait so long to actually bring your ideas into play. |
| #14ff6shadowOct 15, 2008 13:20:47 | You just proved why they are the worst feats ever. Any character that takes them will be behind all of his peers in terms of both attack rolls and defenses, even with these feats. Actually, such a character wouldn't be too far behind. His defenses would be fairly good, racial modifier can make your primary attack stat a starting 16, which while not optimal is sufficient. And as he shows, you can still place points into your primary attack at every oppotunity. Not nearly as bad as you would think. |
| #15awesome_dudeOct 15, 2008 13:48:13 | Actually, such a character wouldn't be too far behind. You could attain similar results without the convolution. |
| #16MaxpersonOct 15, 2008 13:53:55 | I'm just not impressed with such a character. You could attain similar results without the convolution. That's irrelevent. The feat allows for more variety in viable characters, and that's a good thing. The game shouldnt be all about powergamers and optimal builds, and I think that the feast would give RP based characters a boost where they need it. |
| #17snoffoOct 15, 2008 15:45:54 | Heroic Tier Dwarven Stubbornness: Prerequisite: Dwarf Benefit: When you you second wind your bonuses to defenses increase by 1 to a total of 3 Prone attack Prerequisite: Dex 15 Benefit: You don't give combat advantage when your prone. Also you can stand up as a minor action. Combat Expertise Prerequisite: dex 13 Benefit: You can take a -4 penalty to attack rolls and gain a +1 bonus to AC. This bonus increase to 2 when using a shield Improved Healing: Prerequisite: Cleric or Warlord Benefit: Your bonus to healing increase to d8 instead of d6 when you use Healing Word or Inspiring Word. Not sure how to make a sentence that include future leaders. Dwarven Grudge: prerequisite: Dwarf Benefit:You gain a +1 bonus to melee attack rolls against enemies who attack you. This benefit last until the end of your next turn Paragon Tier: Shield of Reprisal Prerequisite: con 15, wis 15, Light shield Prof Benefit: When you score a critcal hit you can make a basic attack against fort. If you hit you daze the target until the start of your next turn. You deal no extra damage with this attack Special:You must be wearing a light shield to benefit from this feat Human Spirit: Prerequisite: Human Benefit:You start with one additional Action point after an extended rest to a total of 2 action points. Dwarven resistance: Prerequisite: Dwarf Benefit: You gain a +1 feat bonus to fort, ref and will defenses Close Quarter combat Prerequisite: Wis 15 Benefit: You deal damage equal to your wisdom mod to a target who grabs you and each round you remain grabbed on the start of your turn. You also get a +3 feat bonus to athletic or acrobatic checks to escape grabs. Improved Divine Challenge Prerequisite: Paladin Benefit:Your Divine Challenge damage increase by 3 points. Improved Combat Challenge Prerequisite: Fighter 17 wis Benefit: You gain resist all 2 against attacks against you from targets marked by your combat challenge Focused Fire Prerequisite: Dex 17 Wis 13 Benefit: When you hit a target on your round you increase your attack bonus the next round against the same target by 1. This bonus stacks to a total of 2. When you miss a target you start again with no bonus. You must be using a bow or crossbow to benefit from this feat Epic Tier Hard as stone Prerequisite: Dwarf Benefit: You gain hp equal to twice your con mod Bow Mastery Prerequisite: Dex 21 Wis 17 Benefit: You can score a critical on a natural roll of 19 and 20 Stand though Prerequisite: Dwarf Benefit: You decrease the number of squares you can be pushed, pulled or slide by 1 square. You also gain a +2 bonus on saving throws to avoid being knocked prone. Should be no secret I love dwarfs :D Anyway do these feats seem balanced? Feedback would be nice |
| #18klaustheprinceOct 15, 2008 16:04:42 | Heroic Tier Seems a bit strong for a heroic feat, especially considering that (as a dwarf) you get to attack too when you use second wind. Prone attack Sounds good. Combat Expertise Seems right for me. Improved Healing: Nice. Dirty Fighting Actually, that's an improved version of Nimble Blade... which is also Heroic. Dwarven Grudge: Definetly overpowered as a heroic feat. Perhaps paragon or epic. Paragon Tier: Sounds very, very broken. It's far better than Devastating Critical. Human Spirit: No. Seriously, no: 1 extra action point for the cost of a feat? You must be kidding me. Dwarven resistance: It should be OK. Close Quarter combat The return of caster-killing grapples? Tell me I'm wrong.
A bit harsh, perhaps, considering that divine challenge is an at-will power and takes only a minor action. Improved Combat Challenge Smells of brokenism to me. Focused Fire That does the same as a fleshseeking magic weapon, but it's better. And it's a feat. No way. Epic Tier Considering that Toughness gives you 15 extra hp at epic tier, this feat is very underpowered. Bow Mastery I don't know: that should be a reason for this not having been included in the PHB. Stand though It could work. Sorry if I sounded superficial or harsh, but it was a long list. |
| #19snoffoOct 15, 2008 16:17:08 | Lower it to 3 instead of 4 and maybe you've got a feat. I feel it's acceptable to give an additional 2 bonus since it's such a situational one. Gives me the feeling of the dwarf who simply wont give up even when seriously wounded. Still I'm not sure if it's a bit overpowered so maybe your right. You know that with this feat any combat will consist of everyone falling flat and using the feat? Going prone is a free action IIRC. Shifting a move action. With your feat standing up a minor action. Your right about this. No doubt Sounds okay, but you'd gotta open it to any Leader. This one too :D Seems a "MUST HAVE" for rogues and all that. Dunno if it's okay. I believe this one is acceptable no untyped attack bonus. Make it a feat bonus and it's good. See no reason for this. It's a nice bonus that compensate for one of the dwarf weaknesses. Not hitting often enough. Also it's on pair with a Warforged feat called Warforged Tactics. Note that I have edited the feat a little. Also I just want to tell you how dwarf like this feat feels to me. You hit me and I certainly hit back. Just like a dwarf :D Steps on the feet of the humans here. I'd maybe make it choosable. I like this feat since it bring back the dwarf natural resistance to magic. Still I agree that maybe it should be chose able. |
| #20snoffoOct 15, 2008 16:41:23 | Actually, that's an improved version of Nimble Blade... which is also Heroic. Your right. Gonna delete the feat. Definetly overpowered as a heroic feat. Perhaps paragon or epic. If you compare it to Warforged Tactics feat then this feat should be ok. Also as I said it compensate for one of the dwarf weaknesses. A weakness that fluff wise shouldn't be there. Mainly hitting less then other warriors. Sounds very, very broken. It's far better than Devastating Critical. Note that you have to use a Light Shield. Do you still think it's overpowered? Smells of brokenism to me. Resist all 2 against target's marked by you doesn't sound overpowered to me. After all you mostly just got 1 target marked at a time and you still get lot of attacks by targets that are not marked. Most of attacks in my experience is targets not marked. The return of caster-killing grapples? Tell me I'm wrong. Didn't see that one. Your right. Was kinda thinking it more of a fighter feat. In that case it would be ok. Any ideas how to make this feat balanced? A bit harsh, perhaps, considering that divine challenge is an at-will power and takes only a minor action. It only comes into effect if the target marked by divine challenge attack someone else than you. Most of the time that shouldn't be the case. It makes it a little harder for the enemy to attack someone else. That does the same as a fleshseeking magic weapon, but it's better. And it's a feat. No way. I see this feat balanced. It only gives you a max bonus of 2 and it only comes into effect the next round. So if you use twin strike and miss with one attack your back to basic. Also your second attack with twin strike wouldn't get a bonus. Considering that Toughness gives you 15 extra hp at epic tier, this feat is very underpowered. This feat is more on the powerful side of feats IMO, just like toughness. Anyway. Thanks for great feedback ![]() Nice to have someone point out some flaws and to get other opinions. Made me rethink a few feats. |
| #21snoffoOct 15, 2008 17:47:17 | Here is a few more feats that I made. Hopefully they are interesting and balanced. Heroic Tier: Combat Vigor Benefit: Your gain +1 feat bonus to healing surge value. Increase this bonus to 3 at paragon tier and 5 at epic tier. Combat Focus Prerequisite: Wis 13 Benefit: You gain a +1 bonus to damage rolls on OAs Increase this bonus to 3 at Paragon tier and 5 at Epic tier. Hold the line: Prerequisite: Con 15 Benefit:You deal additional damage equal to your con mod when you make an attack with your ready action. This does not work on target's who start adjacent to you and you can only make a basic melee attack. Agile in Armor: Benefit: Decrease your armor check penalty from heavy armor and shields by 1 each. Paragon Tier: Combat Tactics: Prerequisite: Wis 13 Benefit: When an enemy provoke OA you can shift 1 square instead of attacking. Epic Tier Elven feets Prerequisite: Elf Benefit: You can shift 2 squares instead of 1 as long as there is no difficult terrain |
| #22snoffoOct 15, 2008 18:05:01 | This is an absolute no-go. That's what the paragon Armor Specialization feats for. It's just Plate that can really benefit from this feat. It would still have a -1 Armor Check Penalty. It's a nice feat for those who want to wear shield and plate while still not hampering some skills too much. For a person in plate. Armor specialization only provide feat bonus to AC |
| #23the_storytellerOct 15, 2008 18:09:04 | You are very good at this Snoffo. Man... Its a lot of feats! The majority of them are really good. Improved Healing is my favorite. |
| #24klaustheprinceOct 15, 2008 18:09:29 | Here is a few more feats that I made. Hopefully they are interesting and balanced. It steps a bit on the dragonborn's toes. you know. But it doesn't look unbalanced. Combat Focus Sounds good. Hold the line: I don't know: the bonus seems pretty much too situational for what it does. Agile in Armor: Seems about OK. Paragon Tier: I don't know. It seems balanced, but... why? Epic Tier I don't know. My guts yell "no", but I'm not that expert in the game. Someone more experienced could probably tell. |
| #25snoffoOct 15, 2008 18:24:20 | I don't know: the bonus seems pretty much too situational for what it does. Maybe I should upgrade this feat a little? You can make any type of attack you want as long as it's a melee attack, and you add your con mod. After all you can ready whatever will/daily/encounter power you want. Seems like a cool and cinematic feat to me. You have the stout fighter standing near the door. Behind him stand the rest of the group, some of them are seriously wounded and need a short rest to regain powers. The fighter readies himself against anyone who dares to come close. The goblins look silently at each other waiting to see who's gonna make the first move... After all they know it will hurt. Anyway what does people think about Dwarven Grudge feat as it stands now? Actually took a little inspiration from Warhammer Online and Ironbreaker :D |
| #26snoffoOct 15, 2008 18:29:26 | You are very good at this Snoffo. Thanks man! ![]() |
| #27karldark_dupOct 16, 2008 1:53:52 | (Edited after comments) Bushido means "way of the horse and bow" and not Kenjutsu It's also a code one lives by and it's mostly debatable. You might want to rethink the name. |
