| #1pyromancer2kJul 18, 2008 17:57:19 | I noticed a pattern in the old DC charts and now a new pattern in the new DC charts that WOTC has released with the errata. As such I don't know about you but I think having to look up the chart or have the chart handy to calculate DCs on the fly is an extra pain and really unnecessary. Especially since WOTC has suggested things like terrain and such increase in DC to match the party level so it's always a challenge. Well here is my simple proposal for house rule and I'd like to know what you guys think. First off left me start by pointing out that from level 1 to 30 the DC for Moderate and Hard increase by 18 points. This is basically 1/2 level + 1 per tier. Since the players also get 1/2 their level bonus to checks those two basically cancel each other out. So what your left with is 10 + 1 per tier. This does start you out one point higher then the chart but given that it jumps 2 points at lvl 3-6 and slowly increases in time it works out. What this means is whenever a player wants to roll a DC for their level they simply roll ability modifier against 10 + 1 per tier DC so someone in paragon would roll against 12 DC for Moderate DC. For Skill check it would of course be the 10 + 1 per tier + 5 for being skills. And the player adds ability mod + trained(if trained) + misc bonuses(powers/feats). If you have a Hard DC then just add another +5 cause you'll notice they are 5 more then moderate. The easy ones are a bit off though and for some reason only increase by 14. I think this is because it's meant for checks that don't involve primary stats and thus won't increase when you raise ability scores to primaries. And of course the issue is what if it's some item that is not suppose to be the same level as the players but rather higher or lower level. Well that is simple too just add or subtract 1 DC for every 2 levels difference depending on which way it is. So anyhow the break down of the system is this. 1) Players DON'T add 1/2 their level to DC checks 2) Calculate Easy Check 5 DC 3) Calculate Moderate Check 10 + 1 per Tier 4) Calculate Hard Check 15 + 1 per Tier 5) For every 2 levels +/- the players are of check +/- 1 Personally I think this is much easy to remember on the fly cause all it breaks down to is 10 + 1 per tier. Everything else mods off that. Also the players don't have to erase their whole skill list every 2 levels to update it. This way the players and the DM pretty much know that for moderate DC during heroic they will need 11, at paragon need 12, at epic need 13. Thus giving the DM and easier time so they know say the party is heroic and he wants to make it a little harder but not full hard so it would be somewhere between 11-16. Without having to go look at the chart figure ok here is what level my players are so the DC should be in this range he'll just know it cause it's always the same since you factor out the extra math of increasing everything by 1 every 1/2 level. |
