My DM and I cam up with a simple fix for the 3 barbarian at-wills to fix the problem with limiting small creatures to only useing one at-will

Line Edit

Requirment: You must be wielding a two-handed weapon

change to

Requirment: You must be wielding a weapon two-handed.

We believe this house rule would easily fix problems untill wizards decideds to get up off their duffs and fix the obvious problem with eratta, rather then with just creating new weapons.

Seems like a nice solution to the problem. I bet WotC will be putting that in the PHB2 errata.

I hope they do. I mean seriously, for how much they supposedly "play tested" all this stuff prior to launch. How they couldn't see this being a problem with their current philosophy of any race, can play any class effectivly, is beyond my understanding.

Well if you're going to use house rules to solve the problem, here's an even better solution: Edit small size.

BEING SMALL
Small characters follow most of the same rules as Medium creatures, with the following exceptions.
  • You can't use two-handed weapons.
  • When you use a versatile weapon, you must use it two-handed, but you don't deal additional damage for doing so.

Remove the gray. Problem solved. :D

Seconded.

But you forgot to replace "most" with "all".

Granted, it still doesn't clear up how Small races are also screwed over by effects that only allow them to be used on things "one size larger than yours", but it's getting there!

I don't follow what you mean by that. If your a small character most things seem to be medium so really in the H tiers the small creatures ahve the advantage over medium creatures.

I can't remember where, but I know there's a chart for changing weapon size. Why not just make a 2H Axe sized for a small character?

'cause the rules for changing weapon sizes go one way, not two.

Umm... What? I don't quite follow. How would Smalls have the advantage?

Let me explain what I meant. Some powers, like Tide of Iron, only work on things up to one size larger. This means that a Medium creature can affect creatures up to Large size. Small races, however, can only do up to Medium.

How, in any sense of the word, would Small races ever have an advantage from not being able to affect as many creatures as a Medium race?

Yeah I can see what you mean about them not being very effective with those powers. But unlike with the at-wills for barbarian those powers can still be used by a small creature, it just isn't as effective since they are small.

Essentially: Small is a handicap and burden that is needless.

I'm not sure if I would consider being small a handicap. It's really all persepctive really. Since there are only 2 PC races and both are geared for mage/rogue builds.

There is a differance between a race being great at a class, and a race being competent.

A halfling can be great as a rogue, and be competent as a figher. It might not be able to do certain things as effectivly as a dragonborn or a goliath fighter. But the same can be held for the reverse. Dragonborn and Goliaths may be hindered from doing certain things as a rogue, that a halfling or even a gnome won't have as much of a problem with.

About the only thing I disagree with about the rules with small creatures is that there seems to be no bonus to being small, only penilties.

Um. Yes actually it is.
Neither one can use the barbarian class at wills (1)
Both lose the ability to use tide of iron in later levels (2)
Both deal less damage than that max builds by considerable levels (3)
Both have few superior weapons to choose from (4)
None have a superior bow style weapon to choose from (5).
Neither one can use quarterstaves, leading to a weird issue with the staff implement.

Its not even as a effective in reality as a Eladrin fighter. Dragonborn and Goliaths have no comparable weakness to being rogues. In fact, both have secondary racial boosts to being rogues.

There is a minor almost meaningless bonus you can squeeze better.
