How much food does a dragon need to eat per day?

I'm gonna go with:  however much the story calls for.  Though my mom, who is a registered dietician would be impressed, i think.

Impressive post is impressive

Yeah, 10kg of meat sounds plausible.
Why is this dragon not hunting on his own?

Just tell your group that "Dragon's magical blood means they can go without food for years and sleep dormant for decades, but an active dragon likes food, and likes his hunt. A Dragon coming out of hibernation will eat vast majorities of wild animals (and adventurers) to make up for the years without food.
The Golden dragon probably eats the most luxorious food of all his kin, seeing how he usually has large colognies of students or worshippers that provide him with food and drinks. Some Chromatic Dragons enslave/are worshipped by large groups of kobolds and get fatter and greedier with each year that passes. The Copper Dragon however prefers hunting his pray, and will rather go days without food chasing a difficult prey than to eat something easily-cought from his local area."

Then you can say "they eat nuffin', but when they do they eat up to 20 cows in one sitting" or say "They eat when they can, and can eat 2 deers a day if feed, but settle for less when hunting".

I see them sort of like some fish: They get as big as their fish-tank allows them to get.

Those calculations are impressive though, I just hope you aren't calculating the force of the wind when your Ranger shoots an arrow or the flow of the cosmos when your Wizard throws a daily power xD

Added note: Dragons don't chew.
