But the only thing in the DMG that touches this point even remotely seems to be "Mounted Combat", or do I miss anything? So, beginning Questions could be: Should the be created as Monsters and if so, with which monster-role in mind? How much to pay? How do they affect XP? Who handles them? From my Point of view, I made good expiriences with Savage Worlds, where Hirelings were distributed equally among the players (didn't matter who paid them), so as long as every player has about an equal amount of Hirelings/Allies I don't see a problem with "giving them out". My problem is that I don't have an Idea how to design them, and what their payment should be. Over in the DMs advice board LtBardolph gave the following response...

So, If you are an 8th level Ranger tasked with leading a strike party of 10 scouts on a small raid, I might give the 10 scouts a common 1st level ranger build but give them just one hit point. The only thing is I would give them pc resilience so that they had a good chance of stabilizing. With this system I would probably say that 4 hirelings equal 1 PC for XP distribution. Or I'd not include them and call it a wash, since I could arguably give the PC an offsetting XP bonus for commanding a unit tactically instead of being an independent hack n slash operator. |
