As a DM, I crave a bit more realism out of my campaign. So I've been hesitant to just allow a PC to grab a mount and ride into glory. I pieced together an idea for treating mounts like intelligent magic items. What do you think of this rule for getting a mount to serve you?

Mount Concordance – starting point 0 if it had been hostile to PC, 5 if purchased / gifted. Higher if circumstances dictate.

  • 20 – 16: Pleased Will serve PC and perform heroic tasks.

  • 15 – 12: Satisfied Will Serve PC

  • 11 – 5: Normal Will accompany PC and serve as ride (no attacks or special mount features)

  • 4 -1: Unsatisfied Can be kept neutral, cannot be ridden, may turn on master

  • 0 or lower: Angered Will try to leave or attack.

Changes in Mount Concordance:

  • Nature/Dungeoneering DC = [10 + Mount Level + (current concordance/3)]
    • 4 hours of work.

    • Success = +1 concordance w/ +1 additional per 5 over the DC.

    • Failure (1-4 below DC) = no change

    • Failure (5-10 below DC) = -1 concordance w/ -1 additional per 5 under.

  • Intimidate DC = [15 + Mount Level]
    • 1 minute of work.

    • DC -2 if mount is bloodied.

    • DC +5 if you can't speak mounts language

    • Success = Increase Attitude one step, plus another per 5 over the DC. Lasts for one day. Concordance loses -1d4 after that day.

    • Failure (1-4 below DC) = -1 concordance.

    • Failure (5-10 below DC) = -2 concordance w/ -2 additional per 5 under.

  • Owner gains a level: +1d6 concordance.

  • Owner mistreats mount:  DM discretion, loss of concordance.

  • Owner leaves mount: -1 concordance per week.

I love this idea. I love to add some including a martial practice if you will to tame an animal to be a mount.

TAME STEED
Your hands and voice soothe a wild beast so that it will bear you as a rider.
level: 2
Component Cost: 1 healing surge
Category: Martial Practice
Market Price:275
Time: 5 minutes
Key Skill: Nature or Atheletics

You and your team try to tame a creature of your level or lower that has that is at least one size larger than the largest team member. If you have the Mounted Combat feat. you are treated as being three levels higher for the purpose of determining what mount benefits you gain from riding the creature. This is done by skill checks. Eight (8) successful before four (4) failures tames the beast [for the time being] adding the keyword 'Mount' to its description. Four failures results in creature attacking team members.

If creature was evil increase DC by 5 if good decrease DC by 5. using a rope decreases DC by 5.   When you using bluff, diplomacy and intimidate next attempt of any of those increases DC by 5 regardless of success or failure.

(magical creatures) Arcana (max 3, DC 20)
You apply arcane pressure to the creature.

Athletics (max 3, DC 20)
You proceed to break in the new mount.

Bluff (max 1, DC 25)
You trick the beast this time.

Dungeoneering (max 2, DC 30)
You coax the beast under shelter from storms.

Diplomacy (max 2 if good, else 1, DC 25)
Caressing the beast, you charm it.

Heal (max 1, DC 15)
You remove a painful object from the beast.

Insight (max 2, DC 25)
You tune into the beast and its whisperings.

Intimidate (max 2, DC 25)
You show the brute some attitude of your own.

Nature (max of 3, DC 20)
You coax the animal based on its natural desires.

Perception (max 2, DC 25)
You examine the beast to evaluate its progress.

If Successful, you start with a concordance of four with less one for each failure along the way.

Mount Concordance – starting point 0 if it had been hostile to PC, 1-4 if just tamed, 5 if purchased / gifted. Higher if circumstances dictate.

  • 20 – 16: Pleased Will serve PC and perform heroic tasks.

    • 4 hours of work.

    • Success = +1 concordance ( 2 if creature Bloodied) w/ +1 additional per 5 over the DC (+2 additional per 5 over the DC if creature was bloodied). also creature regaining hitpoints as if it spent a healing surge and you lose a healing surge.

    • Failure (1-4 below DC) = no change

    • Failure (5-10 below DC) = -1 concordance w/ -1 additional per 5 under.

  • Insight/Perception DC = [20 + Mount level]
    • 4 hours of work.

    • Failure (1-4 below DC) = no change

    • 4 hours of work.

    • Failure (1-4 below DC) = no change

    • Failure (5-10 below DC) = -1 concordance w/ -1 additional per 5 under.

what do you think of this?
I've been looking for way to give mounts to gnome bard [wolf] and halfling rogue [hyena]. also unicorn mount for another.

Hm... that's a pretty good idea.  I'm considering a Dragonriding campaign and instituting something like concordance would be a nice way to add to each dragon's personality.

I haven't read up on Martial Practices, but that should be a route to be a better animal handler. Rituals as well.

With the skills you've added, I feel like it would allow any character to be able to tame a mount. I would like it where it takes a certain skill set for improving your concordance. I feel like Bluff/Diplomacy are already so popular with the face characters to work with humanoids, this is the time for our woodsy, ranger types to get their skill on.   I do really like the Arcana choice though for certain creatures. I'm also intrigued by when Heal could be valuable -- like when bloodied as you put -- but I don't think you could use that skill every day to connect with your mount.

There is a half orc in my game that really wants to be an amazing Dire Wolf rider, so he took Nature and may be interested in any other feats that could boost this concordance challenge (houseruled feats of course).

the heal is for taming skill challenges and is a maximum of 1 success. you can only get credit for pullling a thorn once. you need 8. if you fail at intimidate, bluff, or diplomacy those only work so far and it gets harder to do each attempt. the idea that the team [group effort even if only 2 PCs performing  ritual / practice ].

just a tought: if creature was previously a mount decrease DC by 5 [opposing side included] if it was evil this negates that penalty.  a worg ridden by a goblin would be easier to tame than say a never ridden worg. still gonna be a chore to tame it.  get them ropes ready!

I do make it a rule for mounts that players possess mounted mini and solitary creature [keeps them from too many wanting mounts]. they must have in game solution but physically they must show me 1. unmounted PC, Mounted PC, Creature with no rider.  I got shown halfling outrider hyena with a bridle  and it was a twin of out rider's dog. I had to justify it in game. why did they have to put a bridle on it? wolf was easier to deny. but darned glue and a physical cut and paste with nebblin on a wolf instead of a goblin. was very creative. with concordance they can get mount but can also lose it.
