I'm going to try to make my own version until they fix this. (IF they fix it.) So, here we go. Let me know what you think.

You may lack the discipline of a full-fledged monk, but you are proficient in the art of unarmed combat just the sam. The most common backstory for a hybrid monk is that of either leaving a monastary or being banished from the monestary for lack of discipline. Alternatively, you might be the last surviving member of a monastic order and have taken up a second class to make up for you lack of training as a monk. You can be just as skilled in unarmed combat as a nonhybrid monk, but you must sacrifice some monk options to gain those of another class.
HYBRID MONK CLASS FEATURES
UNARMED COMBATANT You can make unarmed attacks with much greater effectiveness than most combatants. When you make a weapon attack such as a melee basic attack, you can use the monk unarmed strike, which is a weapon in the unarmed weapon group. This weapon has the off-hand weapon property and a +3 proficiency bonus, and it deals 1d8 damage. You must have a hand free to use your monk unarmed strike, even if you’re kicking, kneeing, elbowing, or head-butting a target. Also, your monk unarmed strike can benefit from a magic ki focus if you have one (see “Implements” below).
Full Discipline Many monk powers have the full discipline keyword. A full discipline power gives you two or more actions to choose from, usually an attack technique and a movement technique. Attack techniques usually require a standard action, and movement techniques are options for your move actions. For a monk, a full discipline power represents a fighting style, a unique combination of a move and an attack. You can use only one full discipline power per round. However, if you spend an action point to take an extra action, you can switch to a different full discipline power. You can use the techniques of a full discipline power in whatever order you like, and you can choose to use one of the techniques and not the other during a particular round. The number of times you can use a full discipline power’s techniques during a round is determined by the power’s type—at-will or encounter—and by the actions you have available that round. For example, you can use the techniques of an at-will full discipline power as many times during a round as you like, provided you have enough of the required actions, but you can use the techniques of an encounter full discipline power once during a round.
Hybrid talent Options If you take the Hybrid Talent feat, you can select one of the following options.
MONASTIC TRADITION (CENTERED BREATH) Centered Breath The Centered Breath tradition focuses on honing your mental awareness to better harness psionic magic. This tradition teaches that only by controlling yourself can you control your environment. The tradition’s adherents are typically ascetics, whose monasteries stand in quiet corners of the world where the monks can train and study without distraction. In some of these monasteries, speech is forbidden except for one hour each day. Flurry of Blows: You gain the centered flurry of blows power. Mental Equilibrium: You gain a +1 bonus to Fortitude. This bonus increases to +2 at 11th level and +3 at 21st level.
UNARMORED DEFENSE While you are wearing cloth armor or no armor and aren’t using a shield, you gain a +2 bonus to AC
IMPLEMENTS This class feature functions exactly as the monk class, but only functions with monk powers.
Suggested Combinations
Most hybrid monks can function with just a good dexterity score, making hybrid combinations fairly simple.
A monk/rogue is the most obvious choice, both using dexterity as their main ability and both utilizing stealth as a function of their class.
Combining the hybrid monk with the hybrid avenger creates a highly disciplined killing machine.

The full version of the monk has not been released yet. I suspect that they would wait until the full version is released before also releasing the hybrid version (and MC feats).
I'm going to try to make my own version until they fix this. (IF they fix it.) So, here we go. Let me know what you think.
I think the monastic tradition ability should be included and should be a hybrid version that only works with monk powers. In order to be a striker, you need the ability built-in to deal extra damage.
Implements is already covered by hybrid rules. You do not need to take hybrid talent for them.

| #3LFKJan 25, 2010 0:10:08 | The hybrid form will be included with the PHB3. They only gave us Hybrid rules for the classes that we already have all of. We only have half a Monk. |
| #4taeniaJan 25, 2010 12:18:15 | and half the Psion and the assassin is DDI only so they may not release a version until they release the corresponding source material and then add the assassin hybrid as a dragon article. |
| #5Damon_TorJan 25, 2010 12:36:07 | Strikers always get their bonus damage feature for free as a hybrid, so that would mean the monastic tradition in this case. Full Disciplines are a feature of monk powers, not a class feature per-se. I'd add the unarmed combat feature as free feature number 2.
Other than that, nice write up. |

Pick one;
So they can sell you one more book or a DDI account later?
Because there's something as yet unknown in the monks write-up that expressly forbids it?
Because they ran out of page count?
Because the designers didn't think of it?
Because the monks not complete?
Because ____________

My original thought, (and what I was going to use as my argement,) was that the Artificer class was already set up as a hybrid and, at the bottom of the hybrid version, it lists the source as the PHB3. So, I thought "If the Artificer is from PHB3 and already has a hybrid, why not the Monk?"
When I went to verify this argument, I looked at the full Artificer class and saw that it is from the Eberron HB, (which I do not own.) Only the hybrid version is from the PHB3.
That being said, I guess I'll just wait for PHB3 to check for a hybrid monk. Thanks for all the input, guys. |
