this is my first attempt to build a world using my computer so i was wondering if there is any software out there that could assist me. im looking for map creating things, you know mountains, plains etc...

then i might consider inside of cities

ive goten tired of drawing them up and loosing them so i figured if they stay on pc they would be safer

I use AUTORealms. It's free, and it uses fractals to do coastlines and whatnot. It took a me little bit to get used to it, but it's really good and the price can't be beat.

I use Campaign Cartographer 3 by Profantasy. I'm in the architecture field, so that it's CAD based is a plus for me. However, if you want to really make high-quality maps it's a bit of an investment cause you'll probably want some of the annuals, and the learning curve is slow. Still, if you follow the online tutorial you can produce decent maps with just CC3. Here's my example which took me about 5 hours (including learning mistakes).

What puts me off on Campaign Cartographer is the price. From what I've seen, it's kinda pricey. Worth it if you intend to publish or simply must have publishing quality work, though. I've seen the quality and it's very nice.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know a good Mac compatible mapmaker? I've had to subsist on graph paper for quite a while, and there's some things that just turn out better when computer generated. Especially when your Craft (Drawing) skill is -15 like mine.

You mean text labels right? If you're typing text and it's not appearing then one of two things is happening. (1) It's been scaled too small. Hold the control key and roll your mouse in different directions to get the scale you want. (2) The text layer is below the terrain layer - just move it up.

Or is it something else?

I believe AutoRealms has both Mac and Linux versions.

Looks like they're in the midst of developing a Mac/Linux compatible version, but for now it's still Windows only.

Doesn't clicking on the text button in the left menu bar (at least that's how mine is set up) open the text dialog box for you? If you can't see the "A" that means you need to make a tool bar visible (for example "Right Toolbar 1"). To do this, click on the View Menu --> Toolbars. The rest should be easy.

As a mac user and a DM with poor drawing skills, I would love to see a program like this as well. For now, it's just a paint rip-off.
