Iconic Spells

I've been working on a homebrew dnd "Generic Fantasy Roleplaying" system for quite sometime now, and I have gotten to the spells section. Actually I'm "done" the spells section, but wanted to make sure I didn't forget anyone's favorite spell or magical effect. Done is relative, cause it will always be playtested and revised.

Most spells are self explanatory

Spells I have so far

  • Fireball-esque spell (Although the system is versatile enough for the fireball to be one person or many)

  • Cone of cold clone

  • Lightning blast

  • Gust of wind (Hit foe with blasts of air)

  • Acid Spray

  • Healing Touch - default heal spell

  • Strengthen Ally- Extra attack and damage

  • Fortify Armor- Reduce damage, aka stone skin

  • Speed burst- buff move speed

  • Sensory Enhancement- give darkvision/see through walls/see invis

  • Cloak of Darkness - Invis/mass invis

  • Tranpose self- teleport/mass

  • Flight-

  • Weaken- debuff foes attack

  • Scare- cause fear from 3x

  • Clairvoyance- aka scry

  • light

  • charm person

Summoning magic has been regulated to what is essentially 4e's rituals, along with gate creation and planar travel.

Did I miss your favorite spell?

If this should be moved let the mods know, but its basically homebrew, even if there is no mechanics discussed.

Well, there's /the/ iconic 1st level magic-user spells:  Magic Missle and Sleep.

I aways thought Fire Shield was particularly cool, but I doubt it's iconic.

Wizard Lock and Knock.

The 'Power Words'

Polymorph Self/Other and Shapechange

Not my favorite, but one I'll never forget-  Phantasmal Killer.
As for one's I like, Time Stop and Implosion.

Magic Missile is iconic to DND, but not really fantasy. Plus it can be emulated pretty easy by spells I did include.

Sleep and Fire Shield are ones I definatly consider iconic and left off the list.

Lock and knock are nice, but also totally overlap with the intended functions of their respective skills. Don't know how I feel about including them.

The Power Words are also iconic to dnd, but I think they are at least in form emulated by my weaken spell.

Polymorph ect are included in function if not name by some spells included.

Trying not to include save vs die, and I can't think of a not broken way to include time stop, aside from a refluffed teleport.

I don't mean to shoot all the ideas down, and really do appreciate the help. I'm going to go ahead and include sleep and fireshield.

Looking at some of them, I see that most of them have already been in DnD 4E

- Time Stop gives you 3 Actions you can use to do anything but attack

- I believe Acid Spray is a Sorcerer spell now, and I donno about Fireball, but I think it a Wizard Encounter power

Other then those, I think this would be greatas Homebrew'ed Powers/Riturals. If you need any help with any of them, I am really good at making up powers, but you already said you were "done" with them xD

I have yet to see anything in 3E that I liked (my DM ruined it for me) Sorry I couldn't be much help by giving you what I liked about it spell wise.

That is what you mean, right? ^-^;;

Let me go edit that then.

ShadowLegendXIII , I appreciate the enthusiasm, but the idea was not to create more powers for 4e dnd, but rather to gather up iconic spells for use in my own RPG. Making sure that I do not miss anyone's favorite, or obvious iconic examples.

I'm not sure how "iconic" chain lightning is, but in previous editions I always loved a spell like that.

So, as it was one of my favorites, a chain lightning type spell should be in order, IMO.

I agree with chain lightning, and the lightning blast spell basically does that if effort is invested in it. (basically all spells can be leveled up in the same way feat trees like "rapid shot" existed in 3.x, feat trees also exist for sword swinging and bow shooting as well.)

Generic iconic 'spells' would include:

weather control

transformation (self or others), to animals, plants, monsters, stone, etc...

curses

fortelling the future

bringing back the dead - to life or un-life

'enchanting' victims to make them do your bidding

disapearing into thin air (teleport or invisibility both work)

dispelling magic, banishing/exorcising spirits/demons

summoning

magic circles to protect or bind

wards against danger in general or specific supernatural dangers

granting good luck or cursing with ill luck

I really like the idea of weather control, I hadn't included anything similar and that is pretty iconic, and if it isn't its just cool.

Magic circles to ___ are totally iconic.

The rest I have either already done, or are regulated to a rough 4e ritual equivalent. (IE not at will/encounter but more of a "Too long for battle" time duration) Specifically summoning and reanimation (zombies or raise dead).
