Idea for an upcoming campaign

Hello all. I was wondering if you could put some input into a campaign idea I am currently forming in my mind.

The cmapaign takes place at a nation of an ivory-laden city with high-rising cliffs with sky-blue waterfalls. This city serves as a HUB for the characters. My idea is that I design a PC that the other players hunt down, because of his betrayal to the king. I'm thinking this PC to be the son of the king who worships Bane and flees from being prosectued for acts of treachery against the city's people.

I am thinking the city to be a central spot for worshippers of all kinds of deities, with their main focus on Kord.

Is there anything I could add to or trim off from such a campaign? Thanks in advance for all your input.

hmm... it seems strange that a city so high up, and with Cliffs on at least one side, would be a hub.... it isn't very easy or convenient to get to in a typical D&D setting... I would suggest that you allow for some kind of mode of easy transportation for traders, both of Merchandise and Services (including bringing news) to also be included in the campaign to make that city more accessible.

perhaps Airships, or Teleportation Entrances.

also, PC means Player Character. if the DM controls the Character, it is an NPC (Non-Player Character).

anywho, other than that, I'm liking the idea so far. good starting springboard. you can make it realy interesting if you cause a big political scandal about "oppressing the Church of Bane's equal rights to free worship", since that city is such an acclaimed central hub of religions and faiths. =w= heh... perhaps the city becomes divided between Loyalists and Sepperatists by this scandal, and the PCs not only have to track down and aprehend this murderer/traitor, but also have to quell the uprisings by these protesters (many of whom would likely belong to more sinister religions).

or, they might have to find a way to fix the gaps in the law, covering the loopholes and flaws, and convincing government officials (maybe it's the King, or perhaps there is a Congress or Court which must be petitioned to change the law) that it needs to be done. the PCs would also have to prove to the rioting masses that the criminal in question has in fact broken laws that have nothing to do with his god (leastways directly), and that regardless of his religious practices, certain things are still illegal.

this could have far-reaching ramifications for the rest of the campaign if done right.

If it is a Capital and a Hub (nexus) - it is likely at the centre of numerous converging trade routes from all directions (including Rivers). You could decide the city is the equivelent of the city of Brass (the real one is supposed to be 12 miles diameter with Double Walls).

Your city will likely need 10-25% of it's population in the continuous importation of wood for fuel, food by Wagon or River boat; perhaps subterranean aquaducts bringing in water to fill the huge cistern beneath the city; miles long Storage tunnels for food and supplies...

Plague and poverty insue if you dont supply all the needs of the populace so as much as 50% could be starving (with 10% resorting to canibalism). Body dumps and mass graves for the dead because there are not enough priests and labourers to dig individual graves or fuel to cremate.

Your entire adventure could occur in the city - resulting in it's destruction - and fragmentation of the empire.

The city isn't high on the cliffs-- part of it is, but most of the city is on the valley floor-- with the rivers flowing through the city Those would be pretty cool modes of transportation, I agree. I'd probably go for the teleportation circles for like the higher branches of the government for meetings and whatnot.

I'd have to say, that would be a great idea.

The concern of food and resources is a good idea to squander over, I do believe. It would set up a pretty nice side quest if the PCs wound up in the middle of a diplomatic unrest between its own government and a fair amount of people against the common faith. For now, I probably won't get too in depth with that, but I will certainly consider that if I do decide to go that way.

Hmm... maybe when they return with the bounty, they find the city in unrest...

A city where Kord is popular would be a prime place for trial-by-combat, where criminals are judged guilty or innocent by who has the greater fighting prowess - whether themselves or hired/anointed champions. Say the tradition is that the combat is to surrender (typically when one side reaches bloodied or half-bloodied hit points); under the influence of a Bane worshipper, the combats become to the death - and the prince's prosecutors take on a decidedly sinister tone, eventually including outright monsters. The PCs could easily find themselves hired to stand for a defendant (they might even investigate his innocence or guilt as a matter of fact, as a side quest or plot hook); or be accused themselves.

About the cliff heights - I can envision most goods being hauled by winch - much less expensive than teleports or airships (though tethered hot-air balloons make good elevators!). The winches could be driven by animals or slaves or criminals - with those rivers and waterfalls, there may be some means of using water power to make elevators or even escalators(!), invented by some ancient genius.

Tunnels in the cliffs can be almost anything - storage, living space, crypts - and, if big enough, could be an unknown region - tunnels and chambers dug generations ago, and the maps lost or never made. Anything could be down there (maybe even a portal to a different plane, where water comes forth to make t hose high-cliff waterfalls).

,,,just some ideas...

Ooohh... I have some good ideas coming up from all of these suggestions... It just might make things just as much easier to make side quests. Thanks all for your help. I really did need that, as I am still trying to decide on what to do with all of this lore... At least I still have some time left before the actual campaign starts.
