I have a storyline going right now where the players are bringing back heroes from the past who have been lost (cursed or killed) or tricked by demons. There is a castle involved that has a magic field around it that is in a sort of time loop. Without getting into the details too much, my idea is to have them play these level 20 NPCs in a battle against the demons attacking the castle. Basically rewriting history for the better or worse depending on the outcome of the battle. They are currently playing level 3 characters, but I thought this might be an interesting reward for their hard work. In the aftermath they would find the ruins of the castle and some magic items that would be fairly nice for their level. Will my players be overwhelmed by the options at level 20 vs 3? Or is it not such a big deal? They seem to have combat figured out (for the most part) already. As a DM, how difficult is it going to be to make a challenging encounter for level 20 PCs versus the current level 3s? Is it roughly the same? Also, I plan on making the NPCs not have a ton of magic items - I don't want the players to get hung up on the uber powerful items. How badly will this change things? Should level 20 PCs have items in every single slot? If so, how powerful? I think my players will enjoy trying this out and I hope to tell a decent story with it. Feedback is welcome! |

Also, if you'd prefer to continue with your low level characters, make it sure that the past stays past. Make the adventure end with the low level PCs sitting at a fortune-teller, staring at its crystal balls, or wake up all of a sudden, making it all look like a dream. Also, don't be afraid to kill those high-level adventurers. Heroes die, that makes the whole thing seem more epic and heroic.. only to tell them it was a dream. ![]() |
