| #1tennyjadenMay 07, 2011 15:45:14 | I thought of a couple of new status ailments, I use on a lot of monsters I make in my home game. Paralyzed: The target can only take free and minor actions The target is helpless Confused: The target makes a basic attack or a charge attack against the next target Staggered: The target is immobilized The target slides one square into a random direction at the beginning of each of its turns as a free action Swallowed: The target is restrained The target cannot be targetted by any creature The target has only line of sight to the creature that inflicted that status on the target The target is removed from play The target can escape by making an escape check, but the creature that swallowed the target has a +5 bonus to defense. The target takes ongoing 5 acid damge per tier |
| #2alitainMay 08, 2011 0:10:52 | I thought of a couple of new status ailments, I use on a lot of monsters I make in my home game. Well just generally speaking any enemy that can swallow an enemy says specifically what it does. Not every swallowing ability is the same. So having a set general rule will probably conflict with that unless you plan on just ignore what's on monsters that can swallow. It's not bad I mean as is, but warn you on giving the monsters a +5 to it's defense against a player escaping. It can sometimes be hard enough for a character to break free, escaping relies on an Acrobatics or Athletics against Ref and Fort respectively. Anyway the few enemies I've seen that swallow or engulf players don't have bonuses to the defense the player is using to escape. Which then on that note, if you do decide to keep it, I would instead make that a minus on the player's account to escape. Again, I think it makes it too hard for some characters, but at least by saying players take a -5 to escape attempts is a little simpler I think wording wise. I like Paralyze, though question. Because to me there's two kinds of paralyze; the one where you're still standing but can't move, or where you just fall down because you can even keep your balance. I guess I'd suggest maybe you fall prone when paralyzed, but it seems good enough. I like Staggered as well, interesting idea, but I would maybe get rid of the immobilized. I think you can just keep with the random square movement per turn, though I would just leave it as a shift. I don't know, to me being staggered doesn't make you incapable of movement. I'm seeing it more as just stumbling around some. I would even say change it so that way any time a character takes a move action they shift first 1 square in a random direction. Or else give them a -1 or 2 to attack rolls or defenses with it. Confused seems fun...but sorta odd having then attack the next target, which could very easily mean the players get a free attack against an enemy. Also what happens if they can't attack the target? Even with a charge they may not be able to charge or make a melee basic, especially for spellcasters who don't use implements that can be used as weapons, because unless they dropped there implements they can't even make an unarmed melee basic. Might be better to just have it that when a character makes an attack, they roll a percentage, 50/50 chance that their attack is aimed against the intended target(s). If they miss the percentage then they attack the closest target, chosen at random. If there's no one in range of the attack(like a melee attack) then they attack themselves. I mean in video games confusion generally works that way whether they either attack allies, or damage themselves. But what you got really isn't bad, I can see it working. |
| #3rampantMay 08, 2011 0:23:59 | a helpless creature cannot take actions by definition paralyzed makes little sense |
| #4alitainMay 08, 2011 5:18:49 | a helpless creature cannot take actions by definition hehe, forgot about that, good point. |
| #5tennyjadenMay 08, 2011 13:08:21 | a helpless creature cannot take actions by definition As stated in the compendium: Helpless While a creature is helpless, it grants combat advantage. and under Coup de' Grace:
Where exactly does it state, that a helpless target cannot take actions? I thought of being able to still talk or something, while your body otherwise is not able to move. The swallowed condition is simply a way to streamline this, because every monster has a big block of text on swallowed and works differently. This way I wanted to streamline this a bit. Anyway, thanks to Alitain for all the feedback, some great ideas as well :D. |
| #6sallaMay 08, 2011 17:12:25 | A helpless creature can take whatever actions it likes, yes. It just can't defend itself. USUALLY, you are helpless because you are unconcious, and the unconscious condition states you cannot take actions. If you are helpless for some other reason, though, that isn't the case. |
| #7alitainMay 09, 2011 10:50:39 | You're welcome TennyJaden, hope it helps and good luck. Point to Salla though, I always consider helpless as being unconscious because that's generally how it works. But I do think to that you can be helpless if you're say, bound up like an old school maiden on the train tracks, waiting for Dudley Do-right. I seem to remember something with rituals that need a helpless subject to use it on, also saying something about them being unconscious, or bound or something. Could be a wrong interpretation though so don't quote me on that. |
| #8tennyjadenMay 09, 2011 16:09:45 | Yes, but theoretically a monster could inflict the condition of being helpless, to a target which is completely able to fight (like a curse of, you do not want to defend or something like such), and I think being paralyzed makes quite sense, since you cannot do anything to evade an attack, but simple things like peeking, casting a very small spell or what not should still be possible |
| #9Mythril_SageMay 17, 2011 15:26:46 | Would you mind writing your version of Confused for me to use Alitiain? The current version of Confused is more like Berserk. >=) I've written up minor revisions of the status effects based on your input. Paralyzed: The target can only take free and minor actions The target is helpless (Make a saving throw or fall Prone.) -> (This I think could just be part of an attack's effect line apart from being Paralyzed) Berserk: The target makes a basic attack or a charge attack against the target nearest to it at the start of its turn. Staggered: The target shifts one square in a random direction at the beginning of each of its turns and when it begins a move action. Swallowed: The target is restrained The target cannot be targetted by any creature The target has only line of sight to the creature that inflicted that status on the target The target is removed from play The target can escape by making an escape check(DM may add a penalty to the check at their discretion up to -5) The target takes ongoing 5 acid damage(or other relevent damage type) per tier |
| #10alitainMay 17, 2011 23:03:27 | Would you mind writing your version of Confused for me to use Alitiain? The current version of Confused is more like Berserk. >=) Sure thing, bear with me it may be a little weird. Confused: When making any attack, you roll a percentage to see if you're attack actually targets the intended target. 0-50, You don't attack your intended target and instead attack the next closest target. In the case of a tie between multiple targets, roll a dice to determine at random who the new target of the attack will be, regardless of whether it's an enemy or ally. If there are no other targets in range, you make the attack against yourself, taking all damages and effects as the power states. 51-100, Your attack targets your intended target, proceed as usual with the attack. Note: In terms of rolling for random targets, when something like this comes up we just count the number of people that are being targeted, and roll an accordingly sized dice. Ex: 6 people, roll a d6, 8 people, a d8, etc. Does my write up make sense, or is it confusing? hahaha, yes the pun is intended, proceed with groaning. Thank you, hehe. Anyways, the others look alright. I think I agree with you about the paralyze, I would just remove anything about rolling a saving throw against falling down. It's easier that way to just leave the paralyzed character standing up unless yeah, the power stats they're knocked prone. An offer for Berserk, I would say have it something like; You are considered dominated, though not by any one creature. You can only make basic attacks, or charge attacks while under this condition. On your turn you make a basic attack against the closest creature. If no one is within range you charge the nearest target. If you still can't reach the target you instead move your speed to the nearest creature. Sorry my rendition of Berserk might be wordy or awkward. The reason though is that while what you have is fine, I just saw it as being dominated. Taking again from video game experience, when berserked you generally don't have control over the character. Or the other side is that sometimes Berserk gives you an attack bonus but limits what attacks you can use, and/or gives you a minus to defenses. But I like the out of your control type better, fits more in my mind. Hence the dominating, though the berserked person wouldn't be controlled by anyway, I merely put there for the sole purpose of making sure the player knows when they're suffering from berserk their character is effectively out of their control, can only make attacks against the closest creature(ally or enemy of course), or moves closer to attack. But otherwise they can't do anything else. I only say this because the way you have it sure the person could attack the nearest ally but then they could choose to move away, or use a minor/free action or something to give themselves a saving throw against the effect, or spend an action point and still attack an enemy. Being dominated makes them more out of control in my mind. Again though, what you have is just fine, and mine may be a little too much anyway. Oh yeah, about Swallowed. I would remove the "The target is removed from play line". I say this because if the creature is swallowed, they're automatically cut off from any attacks, or any help allies can give him because none have line of sight/effect to the swallowed one. Which is what I'm assuming you intended with removing them from play. Also, and this may be my personal opinion only since I'm not sure if it's a rule, but I think if a creature is removed from play any effects and such on it might end. Again, my own opinion though I think, so yeah. But keep up the good work! |
| #11Mythril_SageMay 19, 2011 12:00:54 | That more like it Alitain! Thanks for the feedback. Would you mind helping me refine these status conditions? I see a few possible problems with some of them.Alright then, further revisions and additions are layed out neatly here. I have a few notes to make about what may need refining or rewording to clarify and prevent loopholes in the conditions. Paralyzed: The target can only take free and minor actions. The target is helpless. (Make a saving throw or fall Prone.) -> (This is definitely something that should be seperate from being Paralyzed) Berserk: You are considered dominated, though not by any one creature. You can only make basic attacks, or charge attacks while under this condition. On your turn you make a basic attack against the closest creature. If no one is within range you charge the nearest target. If you still can't reach the target you instead move your speed to the nearest creature. -> (This leaves some ambiguity toward what comes before or after this...do you need to Charge first or must you move and then Charge at the nearest target if you can? If you can't Charge after moving once, do you use your standard action to move again? Are you required to Run if that allows you to make a basic or charged attack or can't reach a target even with a regular double move?) Staggered: (could also be called Dizzied) The target shifts one square in a random direction at the beginning of each of its turns and when it begins a move action. Swallowed: The target is restrained. The target cannot be targeted by any creature. The target has only line of sight to the creature that inflicted that status on the target. The target can escape by making an escape check(DM may add a penalty to the check at their discretion up to -5). The target takes 5 acid ongoing damage(or other relevent damage type) per tier. Confused: (a little complicated but seems mostly solid, perhaps replacing the percentage roll with a d10 or saving throw would be better) When making any attack, you roll a percentage to see if you're attack actually targets the intended target. 0-50, You don't attack your intended target and instead attack the next closest target. In the case of a tie between multiple targets, roll a dice to determine at random who the new target of the attack will be, regardless of whether it's an enemy or ally. If there are no other targets in range, you make the attack against yourself, taking all damages and effect as the power states. 51-100, your attack targets your intended target, proceed as usual with the attack. Note in terms of rolling for random targets, when somethin like this comes up we just count the number of people that are being targeted, and roll an accordingly sized dice. Ex. 6 people, roll a d6, 8 people, a d8, etc. |
| #12dave2008May 19, 2011 13:45:04 | I have also seen these which I like: Fragile (eternitypublishing.wordpress.com/2011/03...) You take critical hit damage on all hits. Unaware (shades.emeraldpresspdf.com/) You grant combat advantage. You cannot make active Perception checks outside of your active alertness range. You can’t see any target (your targets have superior cover or total concealment or are invisible) You cannot make opportunity attacks. Guardians use their unaware hit point total. Once they become aware, they convert to their full hit points at the start of their next turn Hidden (shades.emeraldpresspdf.com/) You have not been detected by an active or passive Perception check. You don’t provoke opportunity attacks from enemies. You are still vulnerable to any area, blast, or burst attacks by targeting the square you stand on. You treat all enemies as unaware. If you kill an unaware guardian, you can make a Stealth check as a free action. When you make a successful skill check while hidden, you can make a Stealth check as a free action. You are no longer hidden when an enemy makes a successful active Perception check against you or you move clearly within their line of sight. |
| #13Mythril_SageMay 21, 2011 22:24:36 | Fragile seems more appropriate as part a Frozen status. Sort of a sister to Petrified. I'm thinking it's similar to petrified with an extended crit range. Unaware is interesting, but only the first line makes sense. This seems more appropriate for a painful surprise round...Actually, surprise rounds in combat already cover this. Hidden is already covered in the rules. If you have any suggestions for the Frozen status I'd like to hear what you think. Anyways, More feedback for the status effects I'm working on would be appreciated and if there are any new ideas, I'd be glad to hear them. ![]() |
| #14dave2008May 22, 2011 1:41:01 | Fragile seems more appropriate as part a Frozen status. Sort of a sister to Petrified. I'm thinking it's similar to petrified with an extended crit range. First, none of these are my ideas, thus the links, I was just passing them on. I disagree about Fragile. It should stand on its own. I really like a condition that makes all damage crit. I don't understand how this could possible work as part of being petrified. That makes no sense to me, could you clarify? I could see it working with weakend in some way. Unaware and Hidden are part of a third party set of add-on rules for stealth encounters that I saw reviewed over at En-World. So they don't make complete sense without the rest of the rules. Nothing new to add at the moment, but I like the concept of paralyzed, berserk, confused and staggered. I think the could use some tweaking, I'm just not sure how at the moment. Swallowed doesn't seem like a condition to me, but maybe that is because it always described in monster stat blocks. |
| #15Mythril_SageMay 22, 2011 3:12:14 | Thank you for the links. I checked them out before replying.Well you might be right about Fragile. I'm just having trouble visualising what that would be like role-play wise. Do you become brittle like glass? I agree with what say about Unaware and Hidden. They're seperate and part of a differing ruleset. Thanks for the opinion! If you think of anything let me know what you have in mind. ^_^You're right about Swallowed. It's more of a standardization of the monster attacks made by creatures like the Purple Worm. Still, It IS written like an effect and perhaps should be treated as one, albeit something that would normally be monster exclusive. Who would let the players' PCs be big enough to swallow anything of significant size? A live dragon would likely give me indigestion if I tried....Lol. Dragon steaks aren't bad though, just watch out how you cook your black dragon. |
| #16alitainMay 22, 2011 12:54:02 | I'm with ya Mythril_Sage, Fragile just...doesn't click for me. I mean it's basically Helpless, but still conscious. Though that's on the basis that basically all helpless conditions come from being unconscious, so there are a couple I think that don't. And the only way I can see Fragile is as a debilitation of the person, but then they're weakened, which is already it's own status ailment though obviously does different things. I just don't see it as something to stand alone. Maybe if we didn't already have the weakened condition but...yeah. Not discounting it, just that we already have Helpless which is rare mind you to effect you while staying conscious, but it happens. As for the other two, yeah definitely don't fit with D&D as their own conditions since we already got them in surprise rounds and well...hidden and stealth itself. |
