Hello everyone.

In the game I DM there's I have a Wizard who's basically a dmpc and acts as a sort of guide since none of the players have done D&D before.

Well now that they're all moderately experienced I'd like to do away with him via some sort of heroic sacrifice that left him "gone" but not technically dead.

What I came up with was that he would somehow "become one with the world's magic". So now I'm trying to think of a way to do that which won't be cheesy or confusing to the players. Any suggestions?

Well there is always the Obi-Wan route where he just takes the hit and disappears.  In this case a fireball or something that leaves nothing behind, or if you have Primal Power there is a ritual that locks a person in a tree like prison.  He could get trapped in this and is absorbed into the winds of magic. Just tweak the ritual alittle to suit your need.   Alternatively you could go Hobbit.  Your wizard is alive and well and constantly going off on his own business.  This could also work for later adventure hooks, your Wizard is at the Council of White Stone and comes back..."Hey by the way X is doing Y again go stop it"  Just be sure that the wizard doesn't show up every single time something major happens.

It really depends on how much interaction you want the wizard to have with the party afterwards. Also depends on how colorful you want to be with rules and spells.

Here's a couple ways to do it that would add some serious plot to your game.

I can see where he is staying behind to seal a gate out of which is going to emerge a bad nasty. The bad nasty comes out just enough to snatch the wizards physical body, but because of the magics involved with the gate his psyche is free and can communicate with the party in a limited fashion. - This could lead to quests to find the wizards psyche a new home, to find better ways to communicate with it, etc.

An enemy of the wizard has prepared a special sword of lifestealing and given it to his head thug/rogue/killer etc. There is an encounter where this blade is used on the wizard and he is immediately slain by it, however...his psyche is now in the sword, it was a one shot use of the sword. If the players succeed in slaying the swordwielder they will now have an intelligent sword and the new wielder can communicate with the wizard...sadly his body cannot be restored while his soul is trapped in the blade, but this may not turn out to be a bad thing if the sword is a nice upgrade for a party member. If they fail to kill the swordwielder then a nice quest ensues to recover the blade.
