I'm creating a campaign that will take my characters to the four corners of the map without a central NPC saying "go here and do this, save her get this item" I want the game to be very much in the players hands and only give urban legends and folk tales to aid them in any way. Mostly the characters will be traveling the sea's by boat and I wanted as many ideas and advice to make it real and suspenseful.

I want submissions of stuff like cursed waterways, mysterious islands, places where the maps and nautical charts aren't completed, edge of the world and bermuda triangle stuff.

Thanks in advance

Only advice is don't add urban legends and folklore to your game unless (a) it is literally relevant to something your PCs are going to do, or (b) it serves as a metaphor for a theme you're exploring, or (c) the choice of tale reveals something about the teller.

Irrelevant detail is irrelevant detail. Don't mistake noise for texture.
