Is Improved Defenses a Math Patch and or a Feat Tax? Unlike the Expertise feats, I'm having a really hard time deciding if I should give this away for free. I need some consensus.

5/15/25, as with Expertise.

This is exactly how I remembered it. I was hopeful that they would've changed monster defenses with the release of MM3, Dark Sun, and Monster Vault. This news both saddens and elates me, as it's easy to fix.

Does anybody disagree with Eisenritter here?

Yeah it's a feat tax. I'd go ahead and give it at level 1, as it scales up at 11/21 rather than 15/25. When you give it away isn't a deal breaker though, so long as it is given. Smile

Also Master at Arms is a feat tax. I'd give it away at first level, too. If someone wants the extra fancy effects, they can take the appropriate Expertise feat.

What does Master at Arms do, and what book is it in? Never heard that one called a feat tax.

It's a feat.  Players can play with/without it.  I have and got along fine enough, no biggie.  There's no reason to give players this feat for free.  If they want higher defenses, let them select it as a feat choice themselves.
