I can't recall what it was in 3.5, I remember it was like +10 to strength +6 vorpal sword LOL. I don't care how game breaking or unbalanced it was, it was just plain awesome. But I seem to think it was a bigger blade than a short sword. Does anybody see any problem coming up from me house ruling it to a great sword? |

| #3Tharag_BoccJan 24, 2009 17:32:44 | My thoughts on the matter, copied from the "Open Grave...thoughts, feedback" thread.Any one have any idea why they made the Sword of Kas a short sword other that it's obvious "lurker-rogue" powers? I mean, Vecna made it for Kas to be his Lieutenant...that seems to imply a heavy blade since Kas was a Paladin. Indeed. Given the fact that over the history of D&D Kas's Sword has been of varying lengths (I know it's been both a longsword and a greatsword), I might have expected them to make one of its properties the ability to shape shift to suit it wielders abilities. Definitely let it choose to take the shape of a longsword, shortsword, or greatsword; broadsword (AV) or rapier would probably be reasonable forms as well; and maybe even a scimitar or a falchion. Possibly it might be simplest to let it change into any non-polearm light or heavy blade, though maybe not as I probably wouldn't want to let it take the form of a dagger, sickle, kukri, or scythe. If I were ever going to include the Sword of Kas in an adventure I know I'd probably give let it alter its form as above, though the power would be by the swords will and thus allow another it a nice way to get angry at its own. Nothing like transforming from a shortsword to a greatsword just before your rogue owner goes for an attack to make a point about your current mood. |

If possible, it took control of any fighter who picked it up to turn him evil. It had a few spells, as well. In 2ed, it was Intelligent, +6 defender sword. It had a few spells, as well. In 3rd, the sword was an Intelligent, +6 unholy keen vorpal longsword. It had a few spells, as well. If you want to change it, there's no reason not to. Artifacts were always unbalancing, debatably the reason they were 'awesome'. |
| #5bydchonJan 24, 2009 19:51:29 | ... Wow all those versions of the Sword of Kas sound awesome! I really started playing dnd a lot when 3.0 came out so I didn't even know Kas had a history that went that far back! Maybe someday 20 years from now gamers will be reacting the same way concerning Gulthias and Ashardalon (which i'm thinking were introduced with 3.0 but not sure of). I like having the sword change to suit it's wielder and maybe double crossing a rogue in the middle of combat by changing shape. That's a great idea! EDIT: One more thing: Is this version of the Sword of Kas an artifact? |
| #6crazysamaritanJan 24, 2009 20:12:56 | Dunno: it isn't in the core 3 books. I haven't bought any recent supplements. |
| #7moonglumJan 24, 2009 20:27:04 | I don't recall what the sword of kas was in eldritch wizardry, but it was described as a 'slim, grey' blade in the 1st edition dungeon masters guide-- basically a short sword, since all of the light blades that were not daggers in 1st edition were short swords. There was a note in the players handbook to that effect. Anyhoo, in my 1st edition game it was a short sword. So I am happy that it continues to be a short sword. Its actually cool in an ironic, literary sense for one of the most powerful magic swords known to civilization is a slim, grey short sword. |
