The characters wake up to find themselves at the lowest levels of a dungeon with no idea how they got there.  The 2 prison guards they find will not tell them what the charges are, or how they got there.  They refer them to The Court, which is at a much higher level.  Only a Judge can tell them what the charges are, and then give them their sentence.  They also suggest that the characters find an Advocate to help them.

As the characters go up the levels to find The Court, they run into many other desparate individuals who have been put into the Dungeon for unknown crimes.  Some of them have been down there for years, waiting for their Trial.

Down in the Dungeon they might run into Titorelli, a painter for the Court, who has been allowed to have his sentence reduced (from death to life) in exchange for his paintings.  He tells the characters that he knows ways to hold off a trial, but he doesn't know a way out of the Dungeon.

They might run into the Advocate, who is visiting one of his client, a grump old dwarf named Block, who has been down in the Dungeon for 20 years.

Or the Priest...  More later...

Based on Kafka's unfinished masterpiece "The Trial", and the Orsen Welles movie, it would be a surreal experience that would end with the character's death by the executioners from the Court.  I suppose The Court could be at the highest level.  Maybe I should give them a chance to survive, but this is a Kafkesque dungeon, so everything has a feelings of danger and hopelessness.  Maybe D&D players don't want to be depressed at the end of the game...

Didn't the guy in Kafkas story kill himself in the end?
Also: If there is no chance to escape I don't realy see an adventure there. Just watch saw I-MMCI or read the Kafka story for the same effect (a victim struggeling to survive but it's all hopeless in the end).
I like Kafka, but I'm not sure if his stories are fit for conversion to DnD. His protagonists are (almost) always victims of society/the circumstances/random chance. And they never have a real chance to make it to a happy end. If your players don't mind that, haven't read "The Trial" and are mature and psychologically very stable, go ahead...
Let me know how it worked out anyway...

He was killed at the end by the two police officers.  He said, "Like a dog!" right before he died.  It didn't work out too well...
