Specifically the area of Craft or Profession skills. Currently core 4th edition supports those abilities only as background information, and a DM is encouraged to work with the player to find situations that their backgrounds are relevant. In some instances, Skills and Feats can directly be applied to explain certain backgrounds: An archaeologist might have History as a trained skill, and the Linguist feat for example. Certain sorts of backgrounds are not supported "mechanically" however, and this is what the goal of this thread is to do. Let me state that I do not believe mechanical representations of background information is necessary. Sometimes it can be helpful though, to have something clearly understood by both player and DM, and recorded on the character sheet as a reminder to all. This thread does not seek to account for all types of backgrounds; just the ones which cannot be handled by existing rules or which speak to a special sort of training above the experience of most people in the world. Additionally, these background feats are on a large scale in terms of what they can do from a flavor aspect. I take the position here that nothing a PC does is ever "ordinary" and they excel at whatever they try. If you prefer for your character to have limited experience in certain areas but no real expertise, then do not choose these Artisan Background feats. |
