My DM and one other player were gone for some reason tonight, so there were only 3 of us there. One of the other players has acted as backup DM before, mostly by totally BSing some random encounters.

This time, since there were only two other players, we decided to have some sort of flashback between my dragonborn and the new dragonborn we met last week.

I then threw out an idea I've had floating around in my head about a "Level 0" quest, starring the PCs as children.

Rawr, I'm a warrior!

Shameless plug for a Dragonborn sketch I find hilarious.
It somehow captures the perfect mood for the scene. Drop by the artist's gallery and say something if you want!

I remember level 0 stuff from the old Greyhawk books. Good stuff, and it looks like you had a grand time. kudos.

Heh. My own groop took a harder look at 4E's progression... and actually ran a level (-2) game.

Work the numbers backward, and everyone has Con -3 HP (except for wizards, who get a pity HP, and Wardens, who get docked a HP.)

Compared to level 1, you have 1 less encounter power, 1 less Daily, 1 less feat, and 1 point less in your two highest stats. You get these back as you level up- 250 XP to level (-1), +500 XP more to level 0, +750 XP to level 1 (and +1000 XP to level 2)

That picture is insanely CUUUUUUUUUUUUUTE!!!

I've always wanted to play in a Childhood game. When I was a little girl, one of my heroes was Robin Hood, and I'd wait in a tree for my brother (who had no idea he had been recruited as the Sheriff of Nottingham) and I'd fire sucker darts at him. Then, just like my hero, I had to make a getaway before I got caught.

We did a one-off game where two of the PCs were children. Their stats, IIRC, were 1d6+6, no trained skills, no weapon proficiences, no feats, and I think I did something like one at-will treated as an encounter power, no other powers. All else was a basic attack. Leather armor only, and small weapons only. (They were like, 5 or 6 years old or something like that.) I'd have to look back at my notes.

Thanks to this post I now have a great idea for my campaign this Saturday. Here is what I have written up.

(I am planning on doing a time elapse every time they level)

RULES FOR A LEVEL -2 PLAYER CHARACTER

LEVEL: Set character level as -2

ABILITY SCORES: -3 to All

FEATS: 1 feat (2 if Human)

EXPERIENCE: -1500 xp

HIT POINTS: -9 to HP

HEALING SURGES: -3 to Surges

WEAPONS/ATTACKS: All weapons / attacks are sized down by 1. (small)

AGE: Age 12

COMBAT: No combat powers are known.

CLASS FEATURES: Only class features that do not act as powers in combat are known.

SKILLS: -3 to number of trained skills.

Level -1 -1275 xp:
Age 14
1 (one) at will power that is used as an encounter power.
Gain +1 to all ability scores, 3 HP, 1 Healing Surge, and 1 trained skill (from class list)

Level 0 -800 xp:
Age 16
2 (two) at will powers are now known and are used as encounter powers.
1 (one) Encounter power used as a Daily power.
Gain +1 to all ability scores, 3 HP, 1 Healing Surge, and 1 trained skill (from class list)
Can now wear Light armors if class permits.
Can now wield weapons of medium size.

Level 1 0 xp
Age 18
Gain +1 to all ability scores, 3 HP, 1 Healing Surge, and 1 trained skill (from class list)
Also gain 1 feat. (yes, you now have 1 more than normal level 1 characters)
All powers and class features are now as intended for a level 1 character.

I am sorry if the editing looks horrid. Let me know what you guys think about my write-up.

Cute picture, I might just have to do this in the campaign I'm running for my players.

For the record, this would be especially hilarious if you turned it into a trap.

Make all the stats ahead of time, then simply hand out their new char sheets when the trap goes off. See if they get it.

I was thinking of having it be a magical childeren's book that somehow yanks them into the book for the night. They have to follow some plot in the book (probably intentionally cheesy and silly) to "finish" the book and return to normal.

Bonus points if your group is usually serious and stuff. :D

PS: I'm surprised so many people have done this (or something similar) before. ;)

I am planning on surprising my players with this, I am having them make level 1 characters without equipment or alignment.
