I used old HeroQuest minis...worked out fantastic, since I described the monsters and pointed at the mini's in each encounter.

I'd edit that list at least with regards to Kalarel... the Deathpriest of Orcus (Against the Giants, #3, Uncommon) is Kalarel, and is likely easier to get than a rare from a few sets ago.

Be ready to throw down some cash if you haven't got the older minis on hand. I spent about $100 just amassing the minis for the 1/3 of KotS (including the intro adventure in the DMG and side-treks from Dungeon). Man, do my players like it when their foes are (relatively) accurately represented, but .... cha-ching!

I wish WotC would offer bulked minis for each installment of their flagship 4e campaign arc, at least for a limited time. I mean, they've got the old molds.

And what's up with letting the basic set of dungeon tiles go out of print? Sure, the later speciality sets are beautiful; but not so generic as to have great utility.

Two people (myself included) have minis, and yes, its expensive....though none, and I mean NONE, of our mini's are WotC (me dislike the quality). We proxy a lot.
