Long story short, Lolth is no longer the goddess of the drow. A successful rebellion has thrown her out of power, costing her many worshippers and, by the rules of my game, a tremendous amount of power. (A deity's power is directly related to the number of worshippers.) She tried the chitine but they proved to be woefully inadequate for restoring her to power. She tried working on the drey (Green Ronin creation), but they were too dedicated to their goddess, Nyarleth. She couldn't bring herself to seek help from other demons, as she didn't trust them to remain loyal. While wandering in seacrh of inspiration, she found a handful of exiled Lolthite priestesses, 7 in number. They hadn't prayed to her because they didn't want to seem weak. Lolth was delighted, but lacking deific power, she had to hatch another plan. Mustering what divine power she could, she became a vampire.

Lolth showed herself to her faithful few in her traditional form and told them that they alone had passed her test, and now they were to receive their reward. She fed on each of them, turning them into her vampiric thralls. These seven are the chief vampires, and they roam the Underdark, abducting drow and taking them back to their lairs. There they turn any captured females into vampiric thralls of their own. Males are kept for feeding on.

Their numbers continue to grow exponentially, and some of the Dark Seven, as the first thralls are known, have been expanding to other races in anticipation of needing "operatives" for the surface.

Lolth intends to exact her revenge on the drow who cost her so much. Gromph Baenre, leader of the rebellion who had fooled even the Spider Queen into believing his "devotion", is to be singled out for special treatment when she enacts her grand plan. Gromph, however, has the backing of a handful of obscure drow deities, especially Reshagol (Green Ronin again), an ancient drow deity of the arcane arts. Gromph has been the only mortal who could look into Reshagol's eyes, described as soul-sucking voids, without going utterly insane.

I was thinking this sort of thing might put Lolth into direct conflict with some other deities. What do you think? Raven Queen?

And Orcus will get in on it. Yet another undead deity not under his control? Huge slap in the face. Which might get Vecna involved, though he only knows on what side.
