| #1tennawatchesJul 25, 2011 21:49:30 | I'm beginning to gear up for a future campaign, and decided that it was time for some world building. My last campaign was based in the chaos scar and I had trouble setting it in published worlds. I quickly drew up a map for a homebrew world, and I wanted to flush that land out for my new campaign set in deep in the city of Vasch. I would love it if you expert dms, and interested newbs took a glance at my working OP page, and left comments on this forum. Please keep your comments polite if not positive, all things are open to change and the website should feature two color maps by tomorrow afternoon. Thanks so much for your time and consideration. tennawatches www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/the-dar... |

You might also try Cartographer's Guild for city maps. You'll have to 'ruin' it yourself, but at least if anyone is at all familiar with whatever map you use it will be rather obscured by the chaos. Beyond that, normal city building procedures. This is a highly magical city, so it will probably not be typical pseudo-medieval. There will be wrecked palaces, probably in some district of the city. I'd first decide exactly how big the city was. Then make a list of all the stuff that you want in it, divide it up into districts, then draw a rough map. Maybe look at some city maps at least to get a feel for the size and arrangement of things in actual cities. Figure out what the land form is like. Usually the richer areas might be on higher ground, upwind from the poor quarter, etc. Rivers, coastlines, etc, again you can use actual maps to get interesting ones, there are 1000's of city maps all over the net for real cities. Whatever the economics of the place is that should figure prominently in the structure of the city, unless you propose it was entirely run by magic. Organizations are another thing to consider. I'd make up several and at least keep them in reserve. Flesh out the narrative of what happened a bit so you have the start of a story or two, and you should be ready to go. I wouldn't advise making a street level map of a large city, certainly not right away. You can sketch in a few key areas that you'll need right away or that are so distinctive they should be established right off (maybe the main market and a few such places). |

I'm having my pc's being brought into the city on a chain gang as food for the undead hordes. Some of the PCs will be mercenary plants on the chaingang waiting for an ambush by freedom fighters from below Vasch. This group of freedom fighters will be made up of Devas who have lost their connection to the divine spheres after the weave was broken. Does this feel to railroady? Tennawatches |
