| #1robokomodoMay 19, 2011 6:48:38 | Hi folks. This is the first time posting on the WotC forums. Lots of great info here! ![]() Anyway, here's my conundrum: I'm DMing a campaign and one of my players is playing a Shardmind Psion. He's very adept at using Telekenitic Lift (lvl 2 Utility) in combat for a variety of things. He's also the only one in the game who has bothered to make himself familiar with all the rules and is the one who keeps the action going, so I sort of want to reward him. We've been discussing using Telekenitic Lift on a 'surfboard' and becoming sort of a 'Crystal Surfer'. It started as a joke, but I wasn't opposed to the idea. Here are my thoughts so far. I want to design a magic item (I was thinking lvl 5 rare?) that he could use as a surfboard. It would take the feet slot, obviously. It is only active when Telekenitic Lift is being used on it. When it is, he hovers a few feet above the ground, ignoring any difficult terrain. If he enters water/lava/deep mud etc, he must end his movement on solid ground or fall in normally. Don't want to make it to powerful! I was thinking as a daily power, to spend a power point, be able to fly twice his speed (no restrictions) and make one attack at any point during the movement. He can carry one other ally on the 'surfboard', but can only move half his speed and both grant CA. Thoughts? I want it to be a cool item (which will increase in power as the campaign progresses) but not be completely overpowered. Thanks in advance. |

As it is a daily power, and the base effect is quite strong, it does make assessing what is reasonable quite difficult to judge. There are a few items that interact with power points. A daily item power to fly 2xSpeed (at a cost of a power point, and I assume a Move action, although you don't say?) allowing an attack on-the-fly seems very over-powered compared to other Heroic tier feet slot items. That's not a game-breaker, but is unfair on other would-be fly boys. The rest seems reasonable to me, it is something you could probably already ad-lib for that character with a few Acrobatics skill rolls. I would personally go with an extra use of Telekinetic Lift, but only allowed to use it on the board, as the Daily. Keeps it simple. Then at level 10, consider upgrading the ground-level hover to flight up to 3 squares up. |

I might suggest a magic item design like this: Crystal Board - Level 5 feet slot item Property: The Crystal Board may be the target of Telekinetic Lift. While it is, you move with it, and the board also moves with you. The board is not immobilized, although you and it may remain in mid-air at the end of a Slide. You do not gain the ability to fly, or a fly speed. Property (whilst the board is the target of Telekinetic Lift): All your movement ignores the effects of difficult terrain. Power (Daily, Standard Action): You spend a power point. You cast Telekinetic Lift, as per the Psion second level daily utility, on the Crystal Board. You may not switch targets of this power. In addition, the second time you choose to sustain the effect, you must spend another power point. -- Design notes: 1) As the Telekinetic Lift power gives you a sort of limited flight already, it kind of works in synergy with a simplified power listing, which I think will make the item easier to adjudicate. For instance, I've not included your idea of moving across water, as the player could use a couple of Minor actions to fly across many types of hazardous terrain in any case, simply taking their time. 2) Granting a limited use of Telekinetic Lift as the Daily allows the player to continue feeding in their creative ideas and use their power as they have already *plus* make use of the new item. I am slightly nervous about the power level of this effect, since targetting it to one power is not much of a restriction. It's almost as good as "Recharge your 2nd Level utility power" when it targets a power that the player would recharge anyway given the choice. . . hence I added the power point costs. That has the interesting side effect of making the item usable by other Psionic classes too . . . |
| #5robokomodoMay 20, 2011 7:41:30 | Thanksa bunch. That makes things a lot clearer in my head. I like the idea of basically "recharging" Telekinetic Lift by spending a power point. As the item increases in level throughout the campaign, I can institute things like a fly speed. |

A psion can cast Floating Disk once per day for free, so build a totally awesome throne and ride around in style. |
