Making items more interesting and powerful

How are other DM's handling formerly powerful items that now make players laugh? I mean really, my players are selling this crap at the first town they get to.

What should I do, rejig the power, make my own items? I really wish the items were in the DM's manual so that I could change what they did without my players knowing I was fudging.

Here are a couple items that my players have always loved, now they are sold for 700 gold. Are they stronger then we think?

Gauntlets of Ogre Power Level 5
Property: Gain a +1 item bonus to Athletics checks and
Strength ability checks (but not Strength attacks).
Power (Daily): Free Action. Use this power when you hit
with a melee attack. Add a +5 power bonus to the damage
roll.

Boots of Spider Climbing Level 5
Property: When you make an Athletics check to climb, you
can climb at your normal speed instead of one-half your
speed.
Power (Daily): Move Action. On this move action, you move
with a climb speed equal to your speed.

They aren't necessarily stronger than you think... it's more like you think items should be stronger than they are.

Part of 4th edition's design paradigm is that items never be the defining point of your character.

Where as in previous editions, the fighter owning Gauntlets of Ogre Power was the difference between that character living or dying... in 4th, the Character is the difference between living and dying, and the item is just "frosting."

Yeah, thats a problem. We have been playing since second edition, and we consitently made the items MORE powerful. Now these items just are not fun for my group... If I knew 4E was going to be like this I wouldn't have bought it and convinced my players to do the same.

I think I will use items mostly from the third edition Magic Item Compedium.... that way the players won't know what they do and they won't be able to look them up in the handbook

Here's an idea: If you want to boost the power level of magic items, make their daily powers constantly active. Bam, the gauntlets of ogre power now constantly grant +5 damage and you can climb all day with the slippers of spider climbing.

Those always were two borderline Magic Items. Your Best bet is to have some BBEG covet them and buy them and use them against the PCs or steal them and use them against the PCs.

THats pretty much why the Players in My campaign funded an Armoury run by Paladins. Basicly to keep the powerful stuff out of baddies hands.

If your were going to make magic items in general - real power would be:

The flying Puzzle ship of Tahekt Tarn
Enchantment Cost: 2,000,000gp
Time: 100 Years
Frame: 75 x Minor creation (wood), 75 x Fly
Requirement: Wizard (L20)
Value: (Inconceivable)

Scattered across the world in its individual pieces to avoid being claimed by the forces of Evil who covet it, the ship was crafted by Thaekt Tarn (a Wizard). It is the only flying vessel of its kind and pieces are lost in hordes and in the hands of collectors of all manor and purpose.

Im one with you, boots of spider climbing was one of my favourite items and now the seem to.... well... you know?

making better the gauntlets would make the game system balance go wreck, but the boots... they need to be at least an encounter power

maybe you can do the same with the gauntlets?
