Making the predictable BBEG unpredictable...

Hi all,

I'm running the Scales of War adventure Den of the Destroyer. The PCs have just entered thet ceremonial chamber and watches Fangren, the BBEG in the process of turning into something unpleasant, by performing some ritual. The only thing I've been able to come up with so far (to spice things up), is that Fangrens left hand has increased to enormeous size. But what else? I want the encounter to be something else than a straight up "beat the BBEG to a pulp". Maybe Fangren has foreseen, that they will come and prepared something? But what? Maybe everything is just an illusion? I don't want a TPK, so the challenge should not increase, but I want something different - less cliché.

What if various parts of his body are enlarging and becoming independat, so as he gets injured various chunks of him get knocked off and become independant combatants. His intestines become a writing snake-like grappler, his stomache an acid-spraying menace, his hand a crawling and clawing distraction, etc.

Thanx. Thats good, but it still only leads to combat. I want a twist, so that when the PCs stage their surprise round and attack, something happends that makes them stop. It would be nice with a conversation with the crazed Fangren - if I could somehow make the PCs uncertain, that they are doing the right thing, that would be good.

Nothing makes a PC stop and chat like an invisible wall of force. They'll collide with it like a bird and a clean window.

Perhaps he threatens to sacrifice someone that they have met before and care about. The party won't be so eager to attack him if it means he'll slit their throat.

Or maybe he speaks to them as soon as they get into the room. Maybe he reveals that his motives don't make him such a Big, Bad, and Evil Guy. Maybe he believes the ritual he's completing will cause terrible things in the short term, but the ends justify the means and a better future will result.
