Or... "hey, wanna shave some years off your sentance?"

I am starting a new campaign for some total newbies, I have...

eladrin rogue
Human barbarian
tiefling warlock
Eladrin wizard
Dwarven ranger
dragonborn rogue
eladrin ranger
human rogue
dragonborn paladin
eladrin ranger

So, I am thinking of taking these 10 people and enlisting them in a squad for an army, after they go to prison. I will assign one of them with the most experience of them to squad capitan and take them from one side of a country to the other with orders to loot dungeons for orcs and undead as well as greater actions like holding or seiging a town. I am thinking of runing them through kobold hall but changing the little critters to undeads of various sorts with....something to replace the dragon at the end.

thoughts and ideas?

1) Do your players agree with this set-up?
2) Let the players decide why their Characters were in Jail.
3) You are very heavy with Strikers, try to convince at least 1 player to be either a Warlord or Cleric they're going to have problems with Healing.
4) Check out the Complete Warrior (3.5) it has some interesting idea's on a similar type of campaign.

Have the story be that they are being released from prison to fight for their country, and if they complete their assigned duty then they will pardoned of their crimes and made free men and women.

The dungeon diving at the beginning could be a way of testing them to see what their abilities are. Later on they can get their actual assignments which could then be the assaulting of towns, forts, watch towers and the like. They could also be given the task of holding a position. This could be as simple as get to this hill by mid day tomorrow and hold it until the main force shows up.

I like it.

It's railroading with a capital R but for newbies it can work.

Instead of using the dungeon crawl as "training", make it their first mission.

"After the battle, a squad found a hidden fortification and began to investigate. Only one came back and he died shortly after telling us it was full of orcs and its location. Your mission is to clean it out."
