| #2generalhenryJul 25, 2008 13:42:26 | Martial Controller Form Reply, ver. 2.1: You have proposed a Martial Controller which is based on the following concept(s): 1. [ ] Trap-Setter 2. [ ] Grenade Tosser 3. [1] Exotic Weapon Master 4. [ ] Trick-Shot Master 5. [ ] Grappler / Tripper / Brawler 6. [2, 3] Melee Multiattacker 7. [ ] Faster-than-Human Movement 8. [ ] Non-Magical Emotional Manipulation 9. [ ] Minion Master Your idea does not provide a viable replacement for a Wizard as the party's Controller for the following reasons: 1. [ ] Powers require too much set up time to use in a newly entered area. 2. [1] Powers rely on expendable (and potentially expensive) items that can run out. 3. [1] Powers rely on items (or moves) that can be used by anyone in the manner described, even a child. 4. [1, 3] Powers rely on equipment which cannot be used in extremely common adventuring environments. 5. [ ] Powers rely on severe suspension of disbelief about monster / NPC behavior. 6. [2, 3] Concept is a one-trick wonder that does not lend itself to 30 levels of powers. 7. [3] Concept, in the abstract, belongs better in one of the other three roles. 8. [3] Concept's specific core mechanics are better associated with another role. 9. [2, 3] Concept relies on a core mechanic that, fundamentally, is not battlefield control. 10. [ ] Concept does not effectively provide battlefield control against multiple opponents. 11. [2, 3] Concept cannot control enemies before they reach the party. 12. [2] Concept may be required to put itself in harm's way too much, leading either to quick death or to stepping on the Defender's toes. Additionally, your concept has the following stylistic issues: 1. [ ] Powers are prone to absurd, game-breaking results. 2. [ ] Powers violate physics and common sense (even at Heroic tier). 3. [1] Powers rely on extremely specific gear and constrain flexibility in equipping the character. 4. [ ] Powers rely on items that are magical in origin, diluting the Martial flavor. 5. [1] Concept requires a technology level that makes it unsuited for many games. 6. [ ] Concept is "gimmicky" in execution and is too specific to offer versatility in PC creation. 7. [ ] Reliance on minions may make the class take up an unfair amount of time at the table by making it a "party of one." |

| #4greatfritoJul 26, 2008 0:10:10 | I just found out about these forms in another thread. There are more of these forms? Hm, I'd like to see them. This one is actually quite intriguing, though some of the points on "why this wouldn't work for X" are campaign specific, at best. |
| #5james_gaines_dupJul 26, 2008 0:25:54 | Check out the Lancer thread, that's the closest I think we'll ever get to a martial controller. It's stat'd out for 30lvls, looks nice. |
| #6dalzigJul 26, 2008 0:43:38 | Lancer looks nice, but I'm still not sure what it's trying to accomplish. It's a defender/controller/striker from the looks of it. ![]() |
| #7ff6shadowJul 26, 2008 1:00:46 | Most people ether say Controller or Defender, although a few have said to add a bonus damage abiliy and call it a Striker. I've decided that it's a Controller/Defender hybid. And probably the vlosest thing to a martial controller outside of an archery ranger. |
| #8gnownekJul 26, 2008 1:18:18 | I just saw the Forgotten Realms preview freebie... the Sword Mage is an arcane defender with significant area-effect capabilities that looks a lot like the powers I planned. |
| #9squarecircleJul 26, 2008 2:57:19 | I think a martial controller is pretty much impossible. The closest you could come to would be some sort of arcane archer, but that would be arcane. Though in the PHB itself you could be a tactical warlord, which is somewhat close. |
