Probably countless people have already mentioned this, but I'm too lazy to track them down. ;) I did a quick manual scan through the forums and didn't see anything immediately obvious about this, so I figured I'd give it a shot. Anyway, the goal is to cross the Great Wheel with the 4E Planes. I love both, and I see them as very compatible with each other after only a little tweaking. Here is what I wrote up: MERGING THE GREAT WHEEL WITH THE FOURTH EDITION PLANES The following assumes knowledge of both the Great Wheel and the 4E planes, the latter of which I tend to nickname the "Omniverse." (I do this because it deeply resembles the same-named "example" cosmology in the 3E Manual of the Planes. In fact, I'm tempted to call this merging the "Omni-Wheel.") ** Initiate Relatively Minor Retconning ** Planar alignment doesn't affect characters. However, natives to the plane act in accordance to their plane's alignment. Magic works the same no matter where you are. The Feywild is now a Transitive plane and replaces the Ethereal plane. It touches the Material plane, the Transitive planes, and the Positive Energy plane. Every Material plane has its own Feywild. The Shadowfell is now a Transitive plane and replaces the Shadow plane. It touches the Material plane, the Transitive planes, and the Negative Energy plane. Every Material plane has its own Shadowfell. The dead do not pass through the Shadowfell. The Elemental Chaos is an Inner plane that exists between all the Elemental planes; it's the meeting ground of them all right "beneath" the Material plane. The Inner Planes, aside from the Elemental Chaos, are 100% purely one element, and do not have native cities and the like. Only pure elementals are native to these planes. The 4E Abyss is just the 3E Abyss of the Great Wheel. It does not link directly to the Elemental Chaos, but is reached via normal, 3E means. The Astral Sea is now just the proper name for the 3E Astral plane. After all, it contains all the planes. Beyond the Astral Sea lies the Far Realm of unhinged potential. The Outlands now connects to many more than merely the well-known planes of the Great Wheel. The Outlands' terrain doesn't have any unique elements, but reflects at any given moment the terrain of nearby Outer planes in relation to other nearby Outer planes. Deities living there also have the power to shape the terrain, flora and fauna. Also, it is easy to notice from certain vantage points that the Outlands merely floats in the Astral Sea. The Outer planes no longer connect to each other directly, but only to the Outlands. The River Styx runs through the first layer of all Evil and Chaotic Evil planes, while the River Oceanus does the same for all Good and Lawful Good planes. The Infinite Staircase indirectly connects all Outer planes. Petitioners are only those dead who do not move on to the Great Unknown for whatever reason. Most people do not become petitioners. Dead deities don't rest in the Astral Sea. They just disappear into some other form of existence. ----------------- Only the Outer planes are alignment-based. Lawful Good: Arcadia, Celestia, Elysium Good: Arborea, Beastlands, Bytopia, Ysgard Unaligned: Limbo, Mechanus, Outlands Evil: Carceri, Gehenna, Hades, Nine Hells Chaotic Evil: Abyss, Acheron, Pandemonium |
