Milestones

Hi all,

I decided pretty early on that I didn't like the "milestones occur every other encounter" rule because it would be too hard for me to remember.

Instead, I came up with the alternate idea that after every encounter, a player can choose one of the following:

1) Gain one action point

2) Regain one spent healing surge

3) Recharge one used magic item power

So far, the guys have pretty much only ever been choosing action points (I think this is partly because they've only just begun finding magic items and haven't had that many encounters per day either), but they've been using them just about every encounter anyway, so they haven't been letting them accumulate past 2 at any one time ...

None of my players are powergamers so I doubt they'll take advantage of the rules in this way but I feel like perhaps I should put a limit on the amount of action points you can have at any one time just in case.

So what I want to know is, should the limit be:

1) Equal to character level

2) Equal to 1/2 character level

3) Equal to something else entirely?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Jonathan

Well, you don't have to be the only one keeping track of Milestones.

After every encounter, the group makes a note. After two encounters they get an action point.

You or the players can just tally encounters on a piece of paper, and then circle them or make a check mark each time there's an even number.

Well, but it's not just that. "Every other encounter" just seems kind of arbitrary.

What would be the need for a limit? PCs are limited to using 1 AP per Encounter, and when they take an Extended Rest, their APs are set back to 1. So if they stockpile them, they go to waste.

In the DMG it also states that if the encounter is particularly hard then you can declare it a milestone and award an action point.

Also, this works because after a milestone is accomplished then the PCs are able to use another magic item.

Question. What will you do with this system when you hit paragon tier and magic rings are handed out, since they are more effective after a player has completed a milestone?

Well, would you look at that! I'd forgotten about that little restriction. That makes a world of difference.

I'll have to make sure to point it out to my players.

I haven't decided yet.

Personal thought on rings- in addition to the 3 choices you have now, add the option to trigger the powerup on a ring.

I might just lump it in with option 3.
