I understand that the new philosophy is to use miniatures for monsters and PC's in combat encounters. I have most of the Dungeons of Dread minis. But it seems it would be impossible to have the exact minis to match the monsters in KotSF or any upcoming modules. What do DM's usually do? (a) Use a mini that is close to the right monster? (b) Use anything to mark a monster? (c) Something I'm not thinking of? http://forums.gleemax.com/images/smilies/scratch.gif |

| #3nomanMay 18, 2008 20:46:59 | DM: *Places down soda can* You come across a bl- *sees that it is a Coke can* red dragon. Do you shake the can and then open it for the breath attack? |
| #4pigknightMay 18, 2008 22:58:15 | Hells ya. |
| #5archtyrant_terevothMay 18, 2008 23:03:35 | Most DMs I know just use dice to mark monsters. It also handles numbering. |
| #6NyarlathotepMay 18, 2008 23:19:15 | I never worry about having the exact mini. I will use the exact mini if I have it but if not I just try to find something close. If I don't ahve anything close then I just plop down something the same size and tell them what it represents, i.e. "Okay, see this giant spider? That's actually the giant scorpion." You have no idea how many generic thugs and goons have been represented by orc minis in my games. Even modern day games ahve seen gang members and thugs represented by orcs. |
| #7senorcooMay 19, 2008 6:30:07 | I don't worry about having the specific mini and it actually is easier for the DM to keep track of baddies if they are a little different - Orc Raider, Orc Warrior, etc., but I try to keep it close. My players seem to dig close approximations and I think the power of the visual would be lost if I kept plopping down the same old minis for various encounters. |
| #8Steel_RabbitMay 19, 2008 14:38:02 | We didn't use the random D&D minis, we painted up Reaper figs for the adventure that way we could get the amount of Kobolds cheaply, and effectively. It only took us a day to paint all the models. |
| #9pogminkyMay 19, 2008 15:21:47 | I'm planning on making my own cardboard heroes for minis - as I did for SW Saga. Just get some appropriate art (or mini pics or whatever you want) - copy, paste into a template - print and fold and glue. Mucho minis! |
| #10LudantoMay 19, 2008 15:30:49 | Sometimes I draw up monsters and print them and cut them out into little standees with names and numbers on them. Hmm... I really should get started on that so I'm ready for KtoSF. ![]() |
| #11pigknightMay 19, 2008 19:01:36 | I've used by stuffed pig several times for collasal monsters (Wilbur's the original "I'm a monster. GRR!"" |
| #12mholland_dupMay 20, 2008 8:30:47 | Colored glass beads. Cheap and they come in many, many colors. For $10 you could outfit yourself with enough glass beads to last a lifetime. They also come in several sizes so it is easy to represent the small/medium/large nature of various critters. |
| #13pozasMay 20, 2008 12:13:47 | Colored glass beads. Try these: http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=226726 |
| #14RadazimMay 20, 2008 12:34:53 | Try these: Pure, unadulterated awesome! Many thanks for your generosity! |
| #15mholland_dupMay 20, 2008 13:24:13 | Downloaded. Printed. Cut out and started playing around with them before I went, "Blah!" Yeah, they do the job but a completely flat icon is boring as all get out. I got bored even looking at them after a minute or so. The one thing I did like though was how you showed "marks". I am going to assign colors to my players and use the colored squares to place under miniatures and glass beads. That was a brilliant idea. |
| #16Loki5654May 20, 2008 14:39:46 | Try these: I've been toying with the idea of buying the Alea Tools magnetic markers for awhile now. Once I saw those KotS tokens, I immediately bought the set and the 1" hole punch. Awesome! |
