I try to only monkey with things in little ways.

Critical hits do maximum damage +1 against non-minions. A critical hit on a minion heals you for 1 hit point. I find that these two rules tend to cancel each other out. But the players think they're fun.

- minions: I like the crit vs minion heals you for 1 hp rule. I always fee a crit on a minion is a waisted crit. though I'dd make it a temp hp. (otherwize you're favoring the area blaster, who suddenly heals 4 hp ... while temp hp don't stack)

- non-minions: such a rule is unneeded, as al magic weapons deal additional damage (usually 1d6) on a crit.

Temporary hit point. Yeah, that's a good idea. Thanks.

The non-minion rule did come up early in the game. First session, actually. It was a non-magical maul, I think. The player rolled damage and then wanted to know what to multiply it by before I had a chance to explain that crits just do max damage now. This generated a bit of a discussion ("That sucks!") and the +1 damage was a compromise. I suppose you're right about how it's unnecessary for magical weapons, which is maybe why we forget to apply it so often.

or perhaps +1 damage if you crit with a non-magic weapon.

Otherwize: instead of max damage, rolling all damage dice twice would also be balanced, or doubling the value of the rolled dice
for 1d10: 10 ~ 2d10

But explain to your players that the reason that max-damage is taken, is because, you used to be able to roll a '1' for damage when you did a critical, making it deal less damage then a normal hit ...
