| #1tugaranJul 03, 2008 11:17:32 | Hi For the last 5 years we have played a 3.5 Forgotten Realms Campaign and we converted the PCs to 4e. One of my friends plays an Elven Fighter Level 18 (multiclass Mage) with the Bladesinger Paragon Path. In 3.5 he was wearing a Mithral Elven Chainmail +3 (AC +8) which was a light armor thanks to the Mithral. He had Dexterity 18 (+4 AC bonus) Now we houseruled that Mithral as a material reduces heavy armor to light armor. and here the problem begins :-) His new 4e Chainmail has an AC of +9 (+6 armor +3 enhancement) and he has a Dexterity Score of 23 (+6 bonus) and a +19 bonus (from his 18 Levels and the +10 Base). Total AC: +34 !!!! mmhhhhh .... a little bit overpowered, or ??? normally he does not gain the +6 bonus, because Chainmail is heavy armor and DEX or INT bonuses are not added to his AC. Any ideas for Mithral (or other special materials) armor ??? bye MG |

A Greater Helmed Horror (Level 18 Elite Soldier) would hit your friend's character about 50% of the time (d20 + 24) with its Elemental Greatsword attack, and the Rockfire Dreadnought (Level 18 Soldier) would hit approximately 45% of this time (d20 + 23). If I'd seen a 34 AC in 3.x, I would have choked, but for 4.0, it's really not that high. --Eric |

Allowing mithral to change heavy armor into light isn't even remotely balanced in 4E, even though it was in 3E. I would suggest something more along the lines of figuring out what the cost would be to counter the speed reduction for heavy armor and then allow mithral to thematically do that for the same cost. |

| #7StevemanJul 04, 2008 2:35:06 | I like this a lot, though I think that I'd lower the Plate check to -1 and negate the speed penalty, otherwise it's hardly different from standard Plate. I've worn plate armor made of both steel and modern ultralight composites. The weight of the materials is not what hinders movement. Its the way it is strapped to the body and how it protects the joints. Though I approve of removing the speed (I put that it more to be cautious), I vehemently oppose reducing the check anymore. Also there's a typo. The Mithril plate is supposed to have an AC of +9 |
| #8Titanium_DragonJul 04, 2008 3:44:01 | Allowing Mithral to allow people to add their dexterity modifier to their AC in heavy armor is rediculously broken. |
| #9StevemanJul 04, 2008 15:53:43 | Allowing Mithral to allow people to add their dexterity modifier to their AC in heavy armor is rediculously broken. Watch your exaggerations. Broken yes, rediculously broken no. Its no more broken then powers that add the bonus of two different abilities scores to attacks. |
| #10generalhenryJul 05, 2008 7:15:45 | Its no more broken then powers that add the bonus of two different abilities scores to attacks. LoL powers last a round. Armor is constant. any light armor better than hide is broken. at 30th level with maxed dex or int, hide is BETTER than plate. (yes even considering the advantage of godplate) |
