I created a module template for myself and thought I'd share if anyone is interested. You can see a pdf of it here: http://www.keyourcars.com/files/ModuleTemplate.pdf and get a copy of it here: http://www.keyourcars.com/2008/07/24/module-template/ in word format.

I don't have any leet graphics in this version as those really have to go in last because Word isn't the world's best page layout program but not everyone has Quark or Pagemaker.

I will be adding graphic bits and pieces to it on additional pages for the purposes of copying and pasting things in later.

Thank you.

Template update a bit.

Probably the biggest change is there are now styles for most of the... well styles in the document so it's a lot easier to modify the look and feel. Be careful it's easy to break the stat block though if change the default style.

I added a basic tan title page if you really and truly have a lot of ink. I didn't run it to the edges because most printers don't do that unless you specifically print a borderless photo. It's easy enough to drag it that last little fraction though. And by not doing it it makes it easier to handle.

On the last page are some basic boxes that you can use for section headers and sub heads as well as pull out box that you could use to point out a specific rule for an encounter or offer optional information like a way to change the encounter difficulty. And there's a read aloud box the help distinguish those from regular text.

Location is the same as the first post and zip file is the same name.

I think it's neat, I personally won't be using it, but I think it's an excellent tool fo teaching new DMs, I'll be passing out a few copies to be sure.

Thanks.

Very nice, I'll be using it for sure.

Only one question. I have Microsoft Works. This doc, opens best in Word pad but, I can't add any shading when I increase the size of the monster template. Any suggestion? Or do I just need Word 07 or 03?

This is useful, thanks. I create modules for a group of DM's to run and your template will help give them a standard -- and official -- look.

As far as I know you'll need a version of Word to get the shading effects. I know they work in 03 and 07, I'm not sure if they work in 2000 but I'd bet not. As a 'possible' option OpenOffice might be able to open and keep the shading. www.openoffice.org.

Very nice, I'll be using it for sure.

My biggest problem was the way the stat block looks in works word. Works likes to open files weird, so the stat block looks all twisted and warped, but not in wordpad.

I think it's because works word does'nt recognize the table you used to create it.

I wound up just making my own using the prof band table.

I'm noticing that the free modules released by WotC are in landscape, 3 column format. Is that the new black this year? Personally I prefer the normal vertical layout as it works better for me at the table but just wondering if I should re-release this template as a landscape layout?

Thoughts?

i'm assuming the landscape is for easier online viewing... which, if i were to guess, i'd say is to make it work nicely in conjunction with playing D&D online once D&D Insider is up.

you'll notice that the paper D&D modules are still portrait.

i don't really have an opinion on whether you should switch to landscape. if you want to sign up for extra work - maybe offer both versions?

either way, thanks for the template! i am going to try it out this evening!

I agree, the landscape format is just for the online viewing. When it comes to the work you've done portrait is great, when I print out the pages I've written up I'm completely happy with regular portait format.

If you want to make landscape go for it, I'm sure some people will enjoy. All in all thanks and I look forward to any updates.

Oh, I'll post what I've done for folks to see your layouts in use soon.

Well a big duh to me. That makes perfect sense that that's what the landscape is for, on screen viewing for use with DDI's virtual table I'm sure.

Hmmm not sure if it's worth the work without serious need for it. Plus I'd rather encourage people to play face to face. Online is a second rate substitute I've experienced in the past few years (webrpg, openrpg, irc, teamspeak). Distractions are simply too handy for the players. "What? Sorry I was looking at something on the web." "Checking email, just a second." etc.

I sure am glad I searched the forums for this before losing all hope. :D This template is a godsend, and will keep my modules neat and tidy, just like I like them. Thanks!
