Moria-esque Dwarven Dungeon

I will be, in the relatively near future, running my PCs through an ancient ruined dwarven city - envoking Moria from FotR. The underground city is built upon a great chasm, which plunges deep into the Underdark. Originally built to protect the dwarven kingdom from the Underdark, it fell to it's own purpose when goblins swarmed over in great numbers and defeated the dwarves.

The PCs are journeying here because they need information contained within a great library at the heart of the city. I was wondering what kinds of cool encounters I could devise within the fallen city. Obviously, I want them coming into contact with the goblins, but what other ideas do you think could make for interesting encounters, not necessarily all combat?

Thanks!

1. Traps and Hazards. check.
2. Treasure. check
3. Goblin Nazis?
4. Goblin Communists?

;)

Iron Crown Enterprise had a Moria supplement for the MERP game many years ago.

Indiana Jones is a popular film, and it's traps and puzzles are common knowledge to most gamers, my party included. While I could perhapsuse the final trap in "The Last Crusade" and just change the word, I'm going to need something more original.

Any ideas?

What if the dwarf city was something like this:
http://fromearth.net/LetsPlay/Boatmurdered/

At the end, you have an abandoned fortress filled with traps and horrifying artwork, a lava defense system, demons from the depths, a herd of killer elephants, lots of corpses and tombs to make into undead, and the ghost of a mad, flaming dwarf. A perfect adventure site, imo.

Giant flaming demon boar that kills the npc wizard (not a balrog, but pretty close).

An idea for a twisted dungeon that I have kept - the 'inner heart' where secrets lay may be guarded by Dolgaunts (the creepy blind mutated things from Eberron), cultists/assassins monks.

They hit from the dark, silent as the night.... could make a bad, bad encounter for the heroes.

Maybe the goblinoids touched... Things That Should Not Be. Hence the 'Gaunts... and other Dols, maybe.

One thing that I have thought about doing is using the LotR RPG module based on Moria and converting it over and changing things so that it is not just Moria in D&D... But it has a very extensive map and lots of fluff that could be used.
