I've played 15 adventures and I have yet to be able to use this card. At this point, I can't tell if I've just missed a crucial text blurb while sitting at a table or if a DM (or two) were running tables without much prep time and hadn't seen the story reward certs before running the game.

Anyone have a list of which adventures have an opportunity to use this card?

As a further complication, my main is now level 5, restricting things even a bit further!

Well, I can tell you that each of the tasks is supposed to show up in multiple modules.

I ran 6 different LFR modules at a con last weekend (a mix of 1-4s and 4-7s); I can tell you that, out of those 6, there were 3 instances of the first task, and one instance of the third.

The modules take considerable pains to make clear that there are encounters which serve as tasks for that card. So, if your DMs are missing them, they're really having to work hard to miss them.

Also...from what I've seen, the tasks aren't part of the story reward certs; the player is supposed to note completion of a task on their log.

The tasks are in multiple adventures, although not the majority. If you have played 15 adventures, I am guessing you are missing the opportunity for some reason. I try to always ask if any player has the Zhent quest card at the start. Not saying this is you, but I have encountered players who don't seem to pick up on the clue (or maybe must not listening to the DM), so when I say " you walk past a rather curious looking pottery shop," "or a man in a yellow cloak sneers at you," they looked blank. Following the instruction for the DM to give a hint to clueless players, I usually then ask the player next to the questor to give them a thump to the head to WAKE UP.

The Zhent cards are not mentioned in the story awards, although when you actually play the Zhent quest, I am guessing the story award(s) might be interesting.

Here's a question for the campaign admins - if someone (say, like me) were to put together a list of which mods had opportunities for each of these tasks, would it be a Bad Thing to post that list? And if not here, is there a place where I could?

I would personally prefer that such spoilers be kept off public lists, but that is just my personal opinion. I think there is a Yahoo group where people post spoliers but that members have to actively join to see them. Someone might be able to point you to that list.

Thanks Shawn and kinevon for the info. Turns out the information I have is already listed in the database on the LFRSpoilers group, so no big deal. I was still kinda surprised when putting my list together as to how few there really are - if the number remains constant through each level range it's entirely possible that a character could miss out on one or more quest tasks. It's also entirely possible to complete all three purely by chance, but if you really want to complete them your best bet is to cherrypick the adventures to play based on the quest tasks, which is something we're trying to avoid in LFR, if I'm not mistaken.

Two examples of this with my locals. One is me, the other is our other regular DM. I've played nine mods with my main character now, only one of which was WitR. I've seen two instances of the pottery merchant, but no yellow cloaks. I'm probably going to look into which 4-7 mods have that one in it and request one of them to make sure I don't miss it.

The other regular DM (who plays in my game) is the exact opposite - purely by chance, he found a yellow cloak in the first mod he played, and a pottery merchant in the second. (And hit another opportunity for a yellow cloak later on.) We're just now getting enough level 4 characters to support transitioning to 4-7, so I'll be doing that in two weeks, and the first mod we've picked out to run there he'll have the chance to not kill a Zhent. Purely on the luck of the draw, he's nailed nearly every opportunity there is, while I'm going to have to cherrypick a mod out of 4-7 to make sure I get there. Seems suboptimal to me somehow.

So far though, I still don't have a quest card, so the entire idea, while cool, is moot.
If I encounter all the quest tasks before I have a card, I still can't play the quest adventure.
I find that quite a weak point of the system.

I know at least one of the adventure with the yellow cloaked man is just a little side note that says if anybody has a card, add a guy in a yellow cloak and doesn't explain much more.

We have not yet agreed upon (or been told) a standardized way of presenting the quest task opportunity in the LFR adventures so there is some variation. Personally I think it should be a single page, "mini-encounter" that can be used or skipped as appropriate, with sufficient details the quest task encounter can be role played out w/o a lot of work by the DM.

The distribution of the quest task opportunities is controlled by the Global Admins. The Writing Directors can propose..."hey, this is a spot to do that task," but the Global's approve.

Remember this is the first quest (card) so we are still working out the concept.

If it counts, I pretty strongly disapprove of the notion (unless there is more to it than "get a reward card and you can play this bonus adventure, no reward card, no adventure").

More precisely, if the card just unlocks an extra XP bonus (for completing a major quest) then I'm fine. It the card unlocks the adventure itself then I'm not fine.

We have exactly one copy of that card in our club, out of 40+ active players...

Similar situation with us. Two cards out of roughly a dozen players. I hadn't really gotten far enough as to wonder how we were going to play it, but yeah, that's a good point... though if they include the quest card in that zip/pdf file, that could solve this particular problem.

I think this is more of a problem with the rewards system and how it has not met the stated goals vs the whole quest card idea. My guess is that quest cards will be relatively common if the reward system ever gets any traction.

I have always used the notion that I need to deal with it myself. That does not mean you did not Thad, but I have begun telling the DM before the adventure that I have the card, "in case it is in the mod and you need to prepare for it." I have found in both cases, when it came to a point that would likely incorporate the card...ie. merchant area - potter etc. I was easily able to RP the situation although the other people at the table were completely confused, which made it all the more fun. At the end, they all wanted to know what I was doing and how to get the card themselves. (None have ever signed up for rewards before.) I will say however, don't be surprised if a DM knowing you have the card RP's a red herring. I did in one adventure thinking I was talking to the correct person only to find it was not actually the correct NPC.

In one mod, the elven rogue in the party followed the mysterious stranger in the yellow cloak - since I wouldn't tell him (at the time & in character) why I had handed the gentleman a scratched silver coin.

Of course, when he returned, I handed a scratched silver coin to another random NPC and asked for his name . . . ;)

And, of course, I'll never forget the session where I haggled with Hal the Bootmaker over a pair of boots, and concluded the transaction by warning him that "a storm is coming, you best close up shop."

Hal was a bit confused . . . . ;)

We've had a good time with the quest card in our group.
