| #1Dragon9May 28, 2010 20:54:23 | With multiple threads here and on the Yahoo group discussing mod content, I thought it might be interestign to see the breakdown of level banding in mods. Especially since I know a lot of folks say we need more 1-4 mods. So here's what I have found. For the initial numbers I have left out multi-tier adventures (such as SPEC2-1 or the ADCPs), the MYREs, the adaptable mods, and one shot mods (such as the WEEK events). Obviously it only counts mods that are currently out and not missing or soon to be released (i.e. Origins) mods. Total # of mods: 120 # of H1 mods: 34 (28%) # of H2 mods: 31 (26%) # of H3 mods: 36 (30%) # of P1 mods: 17 (14%) # of P2 mods: 2 (1%) (Yes I know, the percentages don't add up to 100, they add to 99... it's because of rounding, deal with it ;)) So by raw numbers, the heroic tier mods are pretty even. Perhaps there's a perception that there's not enough H1 mods because people who have replayed a lot keep playing the same ones? Anyway, here's some other fun facts for the regional mods: Most H1 friendly Region: Cormyr (4 mods) Least Friendly H1 region: A tie between Impiltur, Moonshae and Luruar with 1 each. Region with the most Quests: Aglarond with 5 full or currently ongoing quests. Average # of quests for a region: 3 (either full or cross-regional) Region with the least # of quests: East Rift with 0. Runner Up: Luruar (1 quest with only a start mod) If you add in the multi-tier SPEC and ADCP mods it adds 3 to every tier except for P2 which only gets 1. |
| #2AlphastreamMay 29, 2010 0:05:01 | That is really interesting. I wondered about this to some extent. It is interesting that the most H1 you can play in a region is 4 mods. Assuming you play them all, and assuming average of 3 mods to gain a level, a Cormyr PC would need 9 mods to reach H4 and would be able to do almost half in-region before being able to play H2. If you played H1 longer, then the ratio drops. On the other hand, woe to the Impiltur/Moonshae/Luruar PC that wants to learn about their region. Play 9 mods, only one was in region. That hurts. I believe EAST has no quests. There may be other regions like that. I think this is an area that should change. It is impressive that there are 34 H1 adventures. Wow! You can almost play 4 PCs and not repeat a single H1 adventure (if you include some of the multi-tier stuff then this is true). It does go to show that there are a lot of options. If you played each adventure twice, you can just about cover 8 PCs. I do think the heavy replay is because of the desire by PCs to get certain magic items, since I see the items at my H1 and H2 tables all the time. |
| #3_Mithreinmaethor_May 29, 2010 5:00:09 | Do your stats take into account all the special modules. Weekend in the Realms etc? I also the adaptables mods should be listed separately of the other modules as well since they were not written for LFR but allowed to be played for LFR. Not that either will skew your stats too much but it will make a difference. |
| #4atrasMay 29, 2010 15:15:52 | Dragon9, thanks for putting this together. It's great information to have. |
| #5Keith53May 29, 2010 17:27:15 | WATE2-4 will be a H1. Keith |
| #6Dragon9May 30, 2010 8:46:31 | Do your stats take into account all the special modules. Weekend in the Realms etc? A little. The listed numbers included the single level band SPECs (1-1 and 1-2) and the QUES mods but not the multi-tier mods (SPECs and ADCPs) and also didn't include the one shot WEEK mods since those aren't available to play outside of the special event they were part of. Adding int he multi-tier stuff adds 3 more mods to each tier except for P2 which gets 1 more. I also the adaptables mods should be listed separately of the other modules as well since they were not written for LFR but allowed to be played for LFR. Actually the numbers I listed didn't include the adaptables. I'll edit that to make it clear. |
| #7Dragon9May 30, 2010 8:48:14 | I believe EAST has no quests. There may be other regions like that. I think this is an area that should change. Whoops! You're right. I'll change that. |
| #8gomeztooMay 31, 2010 2:16:34 | LURU2-3 will be H1 and likely starts a quest. Gomez |
| #9Magicstar1May 31, 2010 3:53:31 | Also released at Origins: DRAG2-2 will be H1 and start a quest. |
| #10NutationMay 31, 2010 11:09:57 | For the initial numbers I have left out multi-tier adventures (such as SPEC2-1 or the ADCPs)... You could safely include SPEC2-1 and modules like it with a different title for each tier. Any PC can play multiple tiers as he levels, so mechanically they are different modules. |
| #11Dragon9Jun 01, 2010 9:03:34 | True, but the method I was using to count was a lot easier (i.e. I didn't screw up and have to recount) when I didn't include them. There's some quesion to with things such as ADCP 2-1 Paladin's Plague as some things I have seen about it say it's a convention only mod, but I would swear I have heard that it would be available for home play.If it won't be then it skews my numbers in terms of the fact that I was trying to offer up numbers of stuff that is widely available for play by anyone. Which is why I also didn't include the WEEK mods. |
| #12tomjscottJun 01, 2010 16:55:40 | I believe EAST has no quests. There may be other regions like that. I think this is an area that should change. This is about to change. I am working on a 3-part series for the East Rift that includes a major quest. I have no idea when the first part is slated to debut, but it's coming. |
| #13baracqJun 11, 2010 3:23:50 | I've noticed that there aren't many P2 modules, yet there's a P3 adventure offered at GenCon. Does anyone know if this means we can expect to see more P2-level mods released between now and then? If not, I forsee a lot of people having trouble making P3 unless they can get Paladin's Plague (ADCP 2-1) in with the character they want to play at that level. Maybe something new at Origins that will be available for general play by late July? |
| #14Madfox11Jun 11, 2010 5:45:24 | CORE2-8 is a P2 adventure which should be released before GenCon. It is the sequel to CORE2-1 and ADCP2-2. It is at the playtest phase right now. |

Well, that "mod" is a special and has P3 as one of the tiers. There are some P3 PCs already because they did play SPEC2-1 on hard at P2 when they were 13th level and the two avalable P2 mods. so they are now 14th (or maybe 15th). There aren't many. This is likely why we are seeing P3 first as a SPEC tier as opposed to its own mod. |

There will be a P3 mod @ GenCon - the 2-round Upon a Sea of Stars. |
| #18Dragon9Jun 13, 2010 13:11:07 | Heh, I stand corrected. ![]() |
| #19KeithricJun 13, 2010 13:27:30 | It's difficult, but not impossible to get to P3 with what's available now. Max out P1 entirely, including carrying over most of a module (SPEC 1-3 P1 being a good capstone), then CORE2-3, DALE2-2, and SPEC2-1 P2 all on high tier. Add either battle interactive or one more forthcoming P2 (AGLA2-2, CORE2-8) and you can be 17th. Add them all, and you can be 18th. That said, it'd sure be nice if we got a couple more P2s before Gen Con, definitely. |
| #20kilpatdsJun 13, 2010 14:48:39 | Since the Battle Interactive is not officially available yet, I think you just said that you can't get to P2 yet. ![]() |
| #21KeithricJun 13, 2010 15:55:10 | It is quite available. Not for homeplay, certainly - and it won't be available for homeplay, ever, so no change there. And you won't need the BI to get to 17th for Gen Con. Although oh boy does it help. Unless they fail to release every single planned P2 mod. If they do, yeah, they're really setting up their Gen Con schedule for failure. I'll likely be playtesting the double-length P3 mod that's playing at Gen Con. After it... I'll probably be 19th. It's very possible, just not at all easy. |
| #22Keith53Jun 13, 2010 16:58:10 | I may be wrong, but I thought MOON2-2 was to be a P2 (based upon year old data). I think there are/were also planned 3 regional adventures in Q3 which were to be P2. Assuming some of them are released before Gencon (like in July)... Still, the plans were made before the change to the 3 month public play occurred and the recent adventure release difficulties. Keith |
| #23kelvadrinJun 13, 2010 19:45:40 | They could solve this problem by releasing MYRA for P2. Im fairly certain it wouldn't be difficult, I have a mod ready when they do decide to release it =) |
| #24kilpatdsJun 13, 2010 22:47:57 | It is quite available. I just went to sanction a public event, and it's not listed. I know when our group ran it recently, we got it through a back door ... not via the official channels. Thus my "not officially" comment. It's also not available for download. So ... it's not officially available. Yes, it's available if you know how to ask, but I'd not say it's "quite available" And you won't need the BI to get to 17th for Gen Con. Although oh boy does it help. I'm doing the setup of this with my 15th level character. Have to make sure I don't get full XP on the next module, or I'll level out of P1 too quickly. I won't be able to have Spec2-1P1 be my last P1 modules (I've already played it). I can't play the BI, because I helped DM it when our group did it recently and we won't run it again any time soon. So it's down to hoping that new modules actually get released again. And I have to do everything on high tier, when people keep commenting on how everyone should stop doing that (Dale1-6, etc) |
| #25KeithricJun 14, 2010 11:51:36 | If you're running a convention, and you ask for the BI, you'll receive it. That's not "back door". It's unfortunate, I'll grant that ![]() |
| #26SkerritJun 14, 2010 12:44:56 | Except that the BI has been released to any convention that requested to run the playtest/DDXP version. So it is more less available (though it should be up sooner or later... *fingers crossed*) |
| #27XaviYagoJun 14, 2010 12:53:12 | I do think the heavy replay is because of the desire by PCs to get certain magic items, since I see the items at my H1 and H2 tables all the time. I'd like to see the H1 play stats, as I have noticed the same thing you have. It looks like everyone has a +2 weapon as soon as they reach Level 2, and the others have the +2 Viscious at Level 3. Even with 30-something H1 modules, my money says that 3-5 get played repeatedly. |
| #28dkay807Jun 14, 2010 16:03:21 | As the author of both CORE2-8 and CORE2-10 (the P2 and P3 in question): I can confirm that CORE2-8 will be ready very soon. It has been playtested thrice and I am iterating on it now. We have another 4 playtests or so lined up. I see no reason why it wouldn't be available before Gen Con. I strongly urge all who play it to Play CORE2-1 and ADCP2-1 first! CORE2-10 was a little behind off the bat, but it will certainly be at Gen Con. I brought in some fresh talent (Uthrac) to write a few encounters and let me tell you, to quote an infamous bald man, CORE2-10 is going rock like winger. I strongly urge all who play it to Play CORE2-3 first! |
| #29Herid_FelJun 14, 2010 16:13:50 | As the author of both CORE2-8 and CORE2-10 (the P2 and P3 in question): Asking folks to play ADCP 2-1 prior to CORE2-8 is a little rough. I went to DDXP and had an opportunity to play it there, as well as helping to run it for a mini-con in the DC area, but I realize that I'm in the minority there. That said, I think that I need one more P2 module between now and GenCon to get most of the way to level 17, and my first slot is going to be SPEC2-2 (P2), so if all goes well, I'll hit level 17 for GenCon and get to see all the chaos that results. |
| #30Madfox11Jun 15, 2010 2:45:44 | As the author of both CORE2-8 and CORE2-10 (the P2 and P3 in question): Note that playing CORE2-2 before CORE2-10 also helps a bit with some of the NPCs. Of course, each of these adventures can also be run as simple stand alones, it is just that plot-lines and NPCs are tied together, and that playing them out of order would look a bit odd ;) |
| #31KeithricJun 15, 2010 9:50:42 | If you want people to avoid playing CORE2-8 until they play the BI... well, hopefully you've got more P2 mods coming out as well. |
| #32dkay807Jun 15, 2010 10:03:41 | If you want people to avoid playing CORE2-8 until they play the BI... well, hopefully you've got more P2 mods coming out as well. For the record, CORE2-8 will make just as much sense if you haven't yet played the BI. However, you'll probably care less about the mission at hand since you won't have as big a stake in it. CORE2-1 helps set the scene much better. Here's the blurb: "Even the most righteous churches are not without corruption. When a powerful Tormish traitor escapes into the Underdark, will you brave the depths of an ancient drow city to see that he is brought to justice? A Living Forgotten Realms adventure set in the Underdark city of Sshamath for characters levels 14-17 that completes a Major Quest. Sequel to CORE2-1 Killing the Messenger and ADCP2-1 Paladin’s Plague." Honestly, people are looking for more story contunity and more plotlines. We're doing our best to offer that, and the QUES1-1, CORE2-1, ADCP2-1, CORE2-8 line provides that. I do agree that more P2 modules would be helpful, but they are coming. We'll have AGLA2-2 coming out for Origins, along with ADCP2-2, and SPEC2-2 for Gen Con to help round things out. I know that WATE2-3, CORM2-3, and IMPI2-3 are also P2 modules on the horizon that each continue major quest lines (continuing WATE2-2, CORM1-6, and IMPI1-6 respectively unless I am mistaken). |
| #33kilpatdsJun 15, 2010 12:58:53 | "Even the most righteous churches are not without corruption. When a powerful Tormish traitor escapes into the Underdark, will you brave the depths of an ancient drow city to see that he is brought to justice? Gah... I've got a preference to avoid your "hard mode" mods, but my Avenger of Torm (who did play Core 2-1) has to play that. (And, see prior discussion, pretty much has to play that on high. Gah...) |
| #34Mommy_was_an_OrcJun 15, 2010 17:26:39 | "Even the most righteous churches are not without corruption. When a powerful Tormish traitor escapes into the Underdark, will you brave the depths of an ancient drow city to see that he is brought to justice? Oh, I can't tell whether or not I'm going to dread or really enjoy the playtest that ended up getting delayed to next week. My pathological liar Paladin 13 who rocked the social aspects of these mods and now will have a legal ring of face stealing is going to have some fun. On the other hand, with the exception of me, our entire party is getting leveled up from 11th to 14th to play the mod in the 1st place, so no +4 items anywhere....and I nearly TPK'd them on low tier in CORE2-1 today. |
| #35greysectorJun 17, 2010 15:21:10 | Region with the least # of quests: East Rift with 0. East does have a major quest (I don't know whether it is dead or not). From EAST1-2 EAST03 A Favor Owed You promised the enigmatic duergar called “The Broker” that you would do him a favor at some point in the future, with no questions asked. This is the beginning of a Major Quest that will be resolved in future East Rift regional adventures. EAST04 An Invitation Xomoo’e, a medicine woman from the Ma’heeta, or “Red-sleeve,” pride of wemics has offered you a rematch at the game of sava if you choose to attend the gathering of tribes that will take place near the Council Hills in the Eastern Shaar at the summer solstice. This is the beginning of a Major Quest that will be resolved in future East Rift regional adventures. Note: A single character may have either EAST03 or EAST04, but not both. There was also a major quest started in ADAP1-5 that I haven't seen anything happen with. |
| #36tomjscottJun 17, 2010 15:35:03 | Region with the least # of quests: East Rift with 0. Unfortunately, with the campaign changes coming up, it's unlikely that unresolved quests will be completed. For instance, I just finished and submitted the final draft of EAST2-3, which had the beginning of a major quest, but I'm told that it'll probably get killed now. I'm assuming the module will be edited to exclude the major quest references and it'll end up being a one-off module with a lot of unanswered questions. |
| #37AlphastreamJun 20, 2010 15:02:08 | Shame. I really think of EAST as one of the finest regions ripe for major underdark cross-regional themes. I just finally saw your short blog posts. My group really had fun with the adventure and I could see EAST2-3 as having sprung a very cool series. I hope you will write about the authoring experience a bit more (and feel free to lash out against those playtest teams... I know what trouble they/we cause! :-) So, what should happen is you should throw your hat in the ring to head up an underdark series and tie into the adventure... ![]() |
| #38tomjscottJun 20, 2010 16:08:50 | Shame. I really think of EAST as one of the finest regions ripe for major underdark cross-regional themes. Yeah, I'd like to write some more on my experience writing EAST2-3. My wife and I are still moving out of our old house and getting it cleaned up so I haven't had much free time to blog. I'm glad you enjoyed the module. I have made some big changes based on the playtester feedback so I expect the final version to be even better. I hope you have a chance to play the final version as well. |
| #39CendragonJun 26, 2010 20:15:13 | Is Core 2-8 going to be premiering at a convention or just coming out for release? |
| #40Madfox11Jun 28, 2010 2:14:15 | Is Core 2-8 going to be premiering at a convention or just coming out for release? Well, it is not premiering at a specific convention, but as with all new adventures at the moment, it is going to be available for public play only for the first few months. |
