Are you possibly thinking of a 3.5 adventure? Everfull mugs were in 3.5, but I haven't seen any yet in 4e.

Actually I am not sure. At last years Gen Con 2009 someone spotted me playing my dwarven 'pirate" and said that there is an adventure where I could get some rum for my character. I am not even certain if it was a mug or not but I seem to remember that it was (maybe a lfetime supply?)

I believe there is a magical cask floating around somewhere...

Sounds like the Cask of Liquid Gold, a level 3 item from AV2.  Don't know if an adventure offers this as an award, but for 680 GP you can buy one yourself.

Dwarves of the Sundered Hall know that while a strong axe or hammer is important, your first earned gold really needs to be set aside for The Cask of Liquid Gold (lvl 3, 680g). It fills with ale every morning. If you travel with other dwarves you probably want to buy a few of them.

There is also a Flagon of Ale Procurement, which points you to the nearest source of ale (or ingredients, if you are a dwarf). It makes for a nice gift for party members, but will generally be useless. This is because, if you are doing it right, it will point to you (and your Cask of Liquid Gold).

Unfortunately the Cask of Liquid Gold is a "Lair Only" item and by definition is not portable.  Unless of course you can convince the DM that your lair is a house-wagon.  Hmmm....

Since this is about a dwarf pirate, the answer is... equip it to your ship!  Preferably on your flying ship! ;)

Yeah, but is that just a flavorful description or supposed to be an actual rule? And if the later, how would you ever buy an lair item and move it to your lair if it can't be moved?

While most lair items are at least very cumbersome (the ones that have no reason to be at least cumbersome should get an update that they only start working after having been fixed to a place for XX hours), there's no hard rule saying that they're can't be moved if your willing/able to cope with it.

We also don't have a rule definition of "lair" anyway. We're nearing the point where LFR characters can own their own (air)ships (if they want to sink that much money into items that are almost pure fluff due to the way LFR is set up), who says I can't install a dojo in the middle deck of my airship? Or at least have the cask of liquid cold in my captain's cabin? Or have the flask on a plain old cart drawn by a ordinary horse?

I'd argue that an (air)ship does constitute a lair (it even has beds!).  A cart not so much, at least not RAI.

Sure, you can't take a lair item around with you... but this item is all RP. I suppose a DM could deny your dwarf the ability to have ale whenever they want...

Ok, now your discriminating vistani

Tell you what, if it has a bed in it then it's all good .

From what I understand, many of them actually set up camps/tents, and use their carts just to carry the stuff.  I think the ones that actually live in their carts are just more memorable than the others than don't.
