There are not feats or any other rules to allow them to train in or use them.

I would assume that they could use them as improvised weapons (1d8 dmg and no Proficiency bonus) with no special abilities that the weapon may have.

Of course if this were a home campaign then you would be free to do whatever you wished to do. But its not so the above is most likely the only choice that you will have.

Has anyone else spotted other mundane equipment in mods that are non-standard?

I think it would be a really cool Dragon Article for someone to flesh-out items like this.

CS is "less active" for RPGA since LG ended.. always growing.. I think we have a half dozen major building going up on campus.. and they are always building new apartments around town.

You just missed Aggiecon. And since the MSC is being torn down at the end of this summer, (major rebuild.. estimated 3 years before the new building opens), I don't know where we will be having aggiecon next year.. there aren't alot of places around town with the necessary space.

Man that sucks. But at least everything will be nice and shiny and new. I hope that Aggiecon can survive the changes.

I think we only have 1 real hold out after LG died and LFR began. Not so sure we can get him to switch over. He is pretty resistant to change. But we have gained several new players so its all good in the end for us with LFR.

If they bring back the "interactive" format for conventions.. instead of the "special".. people will return in droves..

Well, one thing to keep in mind is that in case of monster mechanics it is not always particular important that the attack powers fit the item used. More often then not the exact item is just fluff. In this particular case, it is best to assume that not only the special side effects are the cause of monster training, but the damage as well.

Yeah, that's the oddball thing abot 4e... monsters don't really carry equipment. Unless it's listed in their equipment list that is.

I agree.. BUT.. I think you could easily create a few crunchy items (Barbed Whip + Feats.. based on the encounter presented in the module..)

I want to know if anyone has spotted any cool monster attacks that could be converted to crunchy material for players.

I think it would be rather cool if we fleshed these rule elements together.. then submitted an article to dragon with the results.

Isn't a barbed whip a scourge?

sounds like one.. except in this case .. the whip still had reach.. and I don't think a scorge should have reach.

Yah. PCs derive their stats from all the gear, feats, and classes they have.

NPCs just have stats, how they got them is irrelevant.

Big change that a lot of folks still have difficulty wrapping their heads around.

Which means that it isn't even necessarily the whips doing the 1d8 damage - it's the monsters using them. I'd say the simplest solution is to treat them as normal whips when wielded by a PC.

If some player wanted to use the barbed whip, I would be tempted to allow them to use it for the mod saying "the whip seems to be poorly built. The binding is coming undone and the barbs seem to be losing their edge. You think it will far apart in about a week..." (and then make it clear you are allowing them the benefit to reward their question, but that they don't get to keep it).

That would be fair enough. After all. the main issue isn that you can't take it from the table since you don;t have access to barbed whips.
Note btw that a PC would not be proficent in it, and thus not have an proficiency bonus, so it probably isn't such a great choice.

If they were proficient in the whip, I would allow that to transfer to the barbed whip. Again, for the mod. I'm a fan of players coming up with stuff. It doesn't happen enough in D&D.

It's not really 'coming up with something', and it doesn't lend itself to verisimilitude to have them randomly able to use an item briefly then not later.

So, as a general rule I don't think it's terribly worthwhile, but if it's consistently fun and doesn't cause issues for your group, whatever.
