Hi, I'm looking to join RPGA and play at the ConQuest 2011 convention in Rancho Cordova on the 19th.

Since this is my first go at this kind of organized play, what do I need to do first?

Any help is appreciated.

More specifically:

Go to livingforgottenrealms.com, and download the Character Creation Guide.  It outlines the rules for Living Forgotten Realms characters.  You'll want to review this document, particularly the rules for finding and purchasing magic items, as that's one of the big differences between LFR and a home game.

Build your character before arriving at the convention.  (You might even want to build several different ones, in case you want options, or aren't wedded to a particular character type.)

Also, note that if you're playing a character with the Divine power source:
a) you *must* pick one Forgotten Realms deity for your character (this excludes dead gods and evil gods)
b) Many of the "core" gods (listed in the PHB) don't exist in the Realms; there is a conversion chart in the Character Creation Guide which shows you which Realms gods most closely resemble those "core" gods.

While the CCG outlines rules for starting new LFR characters at levels above 1st (5th, 8th, and 11th), unless you're already experienced with 4E play (or unless the convention isn't offering many adventures suitable for 1st-level PCs), it's strongly encouraged that you start a new LFR character at 1st level.

You'll want to take a look at the LFR adventures being offered at your convention, and determine which will be appropriate for your character's level.  LFR adventures all have a "code", such as CORE2-4.  The letters indicate in which region the adventure is set (CORE is a "core" adventure, and can take place anywhere), and the first number indicates in which year of the campaign the adventure was written / published.  Adventures published in years 1 and 2 are generally written for specific four-level "bands"; if a character's level doesn't fall within that band, he can't play that adventure at that time.  If you have a first-level character, you'll be looking for adventures written for levels 1-4 (these may also be labeled "H1", for Heroic Tier 1).

The Year 3 adventures, which have just started to be released, are written for an entire tier (Heroic, Paragon, or Epic).  So, again, if you have a 1st level character, and are looking at playing a year 3 adventure, just look in the adventure's details to see if it's written for the Heroic tier.

In LFR, you can typically expect your character to gain a level every 3 single-round adventures (or thereabouts); if you're planning on playing more than 2 or 3 adventures, you may want to pre-select what you would take for options at your next level, rather than trying to make your "level up" decisions in between slots at the convention.

Your convention may be running Special (SPEC) and / or Adventuring Company (ADCP) adventures, as well as the "normal" ones.  Note that these are usually written to contain more challenging combats (which may be attractive to you, or may not be), so be aware of that as you select adventures to play.

Finally...this particular message board is an older, "legacy" board, from before WotC's creation of the Wizards.community boards last year.  As such, it sees fairly little traffic.  The newer board, which is moderated by the LFR campaign staff (and has a lot more activity) is at:
community.wizards.com/lfr/go/forum/viewb...
(Note that you'll likely need to request membership in the group before you can post there)

Hope this helps!
