You may choose an item from the Player's Hadbook.. Which one?

I got me a question. There are a couple modules out there that let players take a magic item from the PH of their level or lower. The exact wording is:
Instead of choosing a treasure bundle or one of the additional gold options, a player may choose a single magic item from the Player’s Handbook (and only the PH) for their character. The item level must be equal to or lower than the character’s level.

Now, this used to be simple. It was a pain as everyone at the table would always take a few minutes to read through every item their level or lower, but that was OK. However, with the PHII now out, I'm wondering if items from it would be a valid choice. It is, after all, a Player's Handbook.

And even if items can't be chosen from the PHII, what about masterwork armor? If a player takes an armor from PHI that qualifies for a masterwork bonus, can they chose that bonus from the PHII or other sources?

It must be from the Player's Handbook. If it meant the Player's Handbook 2, it would say Player's Handbook 2 (and in the future, maybe we will see some that say exactly that).

Masterwork armor can be taken as long as it meets the restrictions placed on the armor. So if you buy/find +2 armor in an adventure, you can have the armor be of masterwork quality.

Not that a global admin needs backup from the likes of me - the key is that it says the PH - not "a" PH.

Would it be terribly broken to have it to be able to get PHB2 items when playing this mod?

If the answer is no, is there any chance of the old mods being updated so that you can get a PHB2 item.

If there is, this would be a great boon to PHB2 imeplement users as there are no current mods at all that have an implement for them (plus they'd have a special reason to play those sort of mods), as covered in the Shamans and Totems thread.

I'm fine with the suggestion - but I'm only "in charge" of the forums (and then only marginally so).

I'm sure Shawn, Sean, or Pieter will be along soon enough to evaluate the suggestion officially.

If there IS a downside it would simply be that people who played this module already were given a more limited selection of treasure choices. However, since the treasures in PHB2 are fairly character specific, that may not ACTUALLY be a problem.

Yeah I was hoping by suggesting it here someone would pass it along or they'd come have a look

I vote "no"; there will be plenty of low-level mods coming down the pike that will give opportunities for new stuff. One thing I learned from being an administrator in a living campaign, is that trying to update old adventures is a no-win situation...

I'm about 90% certain one or more of the globals have seen this thread, but I'll poke one of them next time I see them lurking online.

. . . well. . . I only have the IM account for one of them, but I'll poke him anyway. He's needs a good wake-up poke every now and then.

If by plenty you mean two then yes there are plenty. Unfortunately I don't consider two level 1-4 mods plenty

As it stands, players have no incentive to replay the same old mods they've played a dozen times already. And given there are only two level 1-4 mods, players have no incentive to play their PHB2 characters.

"will be" in an important part of his statement.

I'd not be surprised if we get 2+ low-heroic-tier mods in most or even all future releases from here out.

At the current rate of 2 per quarter (NOTE: not very accurate I know, but its all we've got) someone might finally reach 4th level after 6 months...

Anyway, my point was giving people a reason to replay the old mods is a good idea IMO.

I put you on "block" because my ribs are sore from the poking.

The campaign staff is aware that new classes that use new types of implements are going to have issues with regards to treasure bundles. We are working on it. For a variety of reasons, just changing adventures already released is problematic. PCs being able to flat-out buy magic items of their level or less helps. Being able use the transfer enchantment ritual will help as well. But we know other avenues would help. We are working on it.

And yes, this quarter appears to have to be light on low-heroic adventures. We expected to have more, but certain situations arose that moved the levels of some of the adventures. I am expecting that we might have more play opportunities than the ones listed in the schedule, so hang in there.

Thanks,

Shawn

How does this help? It's not like someone can find a +2 wand of whatever and transfer the enchantment to a Totem.

There are a couple of mods that give you a "+2 magic implement," which can be a totem. Otherwise, yeah, it's a problem.
