For us Cleric players, are there any rewards out there that will advance us within our church? Some of us have goals of rising in the ranks of the Church so that we are well known throughout the lands and revered by fellow followers or worshipers of our god.

No. Unless they start up some sort of campaign wide adventuring company for your church. otherwise, becoming a Chosen or Demigod epic destiny will do the trick pretty well.

If anything, you'd likely need some sort of church-based metaorganization. Many regions in Living Greyhawk had these sorts of things, but it's not at all clear yet if LFR is going to have anything like this.

In 4e clerics aren't synonymous with "priest." Clerics don't have to be members of any organization. In fact, most clerics probably shouldn't be, as being a member of a church would probably get in the way of adventuring.

Also, most priests (NPCs) in 4e aren't clerics. Most can't use prayers (powers with the divine power source), and many can't do rituals.

Carefully read how clerics and paladins get their powers. Their powers come from themselves. Each person has a divine power source within them, it is just a matter of cultivating and using it. The first step is to light it.

The first clerics and paladins were sparked by interactions with deities, their exarchs, or other mediums. Why? Make up yourself own reason.

My Reasoning
My justification is that it doesn't diminish a being (such as a deity) to "jump start" a mortal's divine torch. But doing so can grant the deity an ally in its cause.

At present, there is no direct rank or rise in rank associated with being a cleric and any particular temple. It is possible that a regional adventure might include a story award that is some tie.

You could have a "Tempur of Tempus" adventuring companies (or such) but for now, no metaorg for temples has been planned or approved.

It was a lot of headaches back in LC days with PCs becoming immersed in temple heirarchies so I don't think that will be replicated. After all, your "job" now is being an adventurer.

Having played one of the four High Priests of Shaundakul of Ravens Bluff back in the day in LC, while fun, it really was a bit silly and nonsensical.

Adventuring clerics are really best as their own category, outside of normal temple hierarchies.

Besides, the High Bishop of Waterdeep does not get to go adventuring.

Of course the high bishop of waterdeep goes adventuring. Why do you think no one in Waterdeep ever sees him? He's never there! He's off in East Rift or Thay kicking butt while spreading the word of Amuanator!

Or he could just be kicking butt.
