| #1anubis_reynardJun 22, 2009 0:43:34 | I was wondering whether I would pe violating some kind of rule (written or unwritten) if, for example, I made a Changling Chaos Sorcerer who pretended he was (in alternating game sessions) a Halfling or a Drow. I would make no bones about my class or role, certiantly not during muster, but when it came to "alright, what are you", introducing myself as either "I'm Lucky Lapine the halfling sorcerer, pleased to meet you!" or "You can call me Vash the Sorcerer. My power in the arcane arts is beyond even my own control. My apoligies in advance." Would this be a problem character for some groups? |
| #2JohnLynchJun 22, 2009 1:44:28 | I wouldn't mind. I'd in fact be inclined to do the same thing :D |
| #3ibixatJun 22, 2009 2:32:47 | I think a quick discussion with the DM first would be in order, if he's ok with you never revealing it cool. If he's not I'd suggest you use your normal in character intro but mention out of character after that you're a changeling (*edited halfling to say changeling, that's what I had meant) My Bard has taken to introducing himself to the party as King Lucan the 1st of Gelderland, at which point I roll a d20 add my bluff mod and say and if your passive insight is less than (bluff roll) you just might believe me. OH I also make up information about just about anything when I fail a knowledge skill check, and share it with the party as truth. I make sure I do it in my Bard's voice and that people know I'm just making stuff up, bluff checks and all. It's fun and I don't think anyone minds when the Bard lies to embellish the story =P |
| #4Madfox11Jun 22, 2009 2:34:57 | It depends on the group of players, and the importance they place on race and player honesty. Personally I would prefer to tell the players my character's race, but mention that it is not something I would tell the characters. As a DM I certainly want to know the race of the players at the table, and in public games I dislike the difficulties of secret notes and trying to keep things hidden from other players instead of being able to directly ask the player about specific abilities. Note that drow would be a bad choice as a disguise for a changeling since the changeling lacks darkvision. Besides, if you want to generate distrust for your character, mentioning you are a changeling would do the trick as well ;) |
| #5gomeztooJun 22, 2009 2:35:36 | Players have the right to know that you are playing a changeling. What you do *in character* then doesn't matter. |
| #6JohnduBoisJun 22, 2009 9:42:26 | I think it would be fine to have your character never reveal his true race to other characters, but it would be in bad form to not to inform your DM and other players what your true race is. Some monsters and magic items (and I even think one or two powers) affect shapeshifters differently than other characters, and you want to make sure that is honest. Also (and I may be wrong about this, since my EPG is at home and I am at work), I think that the Changeling's shapeshifting power is limited to Medium humanoids, so you could not disguise yourself as a halfling at all. |
| #7MisroiJun 27, 2009 13:39:23 | I plan on doing something similar. A Changeling Fighter, with a different cover story for each of the regional adventures. It's a loyal servant of the King when it's in Cormyr, a burly tempermental Ffolk when it's in the Moonshaes, and even a dour dwarf when it's in the East Rift. Of course, it's really from Amn, and has bought Skill Training (Bluff). My goal is to see how long it takes people to realize I'm playing the same character. |
| #8haferkaJul 09, 2009 0:07:44 | I have a warforged Bard.. (The Witchalock) that wears elfskin as a disguise/armor. He has a 19 Passive Perception, and a +10 to Bluff, so I roll the Disguise check at the beginning of every mod. So far it hasn't mattered, but if I were to roll low enophe for my passive perception to notice the flaw in my disguise, I simply readjust the diguise (re-roll). I usually stay away from melee combat, so I keep the damage to my outfit at a minimum, and I cast Mending to repair any major damage. I can't remember the ritual name.. but Its supposed to be used to keep bodies fresh.. so they can be raised.. but since it says that it keeps it perfectly preserved I also cast that so it doesn't decay over time. |
| #9Dragon9Jul 09, 2009 7:37:42 | That's just... ewww... ![]() |
| #10MisroiJul 10, 2009 1:27:38 | Wow, that's twisted. Now that you've said that, I'd love to see a mod where you're tracking down a warforged serial killer who has been making a "skinsuit" from his victims. Clearly, he's malfunctioning. Proposed Module Name: Tech Support. I would play this. |
| #11UndrhilJul 10, 2009 11:10:26 | I created a Changeling Artificer named Rikku (created along the same lines as the character from FFX and FFX-2.) So far, though, she's made herself look like our party's Drow Avenger and they call themselves twins. Quite fun to roleplay. For some reason, there hasn't been a need to make a Bluff check yet.... ![]() |
| #12Dragon9Jul 10, 2009 11:26:03 | Personally, I have a couple Changeling PC ideas rattling aroudn in my skull. I plan on, during character introductions, describign my character as whatever theyappear as, then saying "Out of character, my PC is a changeling." Basically just dividing up the in character and out of character info. I trust players will use that information responsibly. It works well in that case, since Changelings rarely, if ever, show their true selves. I also thought of one who essentially has multiple personality disorder and the outward appearance shifts depending on the situation. |
| #13bgibbonsJul 10, 2009 14:12:46 | I also thought of one who essentially has multiple personality disorder and the outward appearance shifts depending on the situation. A changeling wild magic sorcerer with a different appearance and personality for each of the 10 resistances would be amusing, particularly when one of the other personalities used the Elemental Shift utility power to force a change in the middle of a combat. |
| #14WolfStar76Jul 12, 2009 9:17:47 | Ah, but can I play a Changeling who looks like a Revenant who thinks he was a Dhampyre Warforged Paladin of Kelemvor, who's on a quest to retrieve his Ornithopter? ^_^ |
| #15tancreadJul 12, 2009 9:48:45 | Ah, but can I play a changeling who looks like a revenant who thinks he was a warforged? ^_^ You left out Dhampyre Paladin of Kelemvor in that one. |
| #16Dragon9Jul 12, 2009 11:37:48 | Ah, but can I play a changeling who looks like a revenant who thinks he was a warforged? ^_^ Only if the Warforged is legal in LFR. |
| #17UndrhilJul 13, 2009 2:43:54 | Only if the Warforged thinks it's a Gnome trapped inside a Warforged body. ;) |
| #18kinevonJul 13, 2009 3:02:48 | Only if the Warforged thinks it's a Gnome trapped inside a Warforged body. ;) In a high, tiny voice; "I am Corik, a Warforged stuck inside a Gnome's body. And over there is my Halfling brother." :hide: |
| #19WolfStar76Jul 13, 2009 14:17:51 | You left out Dhampyre Paladin of Kelemvor in that one. I've corrected it. ![]() |
| #20Dragon9Jul 13, 2009 14:57:35 | You forgot Spellscarred. |
| #21WolfStar76Jul 15, 2009 3:44:53 | You forgot Spellscarred. Well, I didn't want to get ridiculous. I mean, really! |
| #22ibixatJul 16, 2009 3:22:55 | Well, I didn't want to get ridiculous. I mean, really! Go Ridiculous or go home is my motto |
