I was wondering how this would work in LFR. Basically, I want the Power of Strength and Power of Skill feats but currently no FR deity has both domains, and neither Oghma or Sune really fit well with an avenger schtick |
| #2logopolisOct 10, 2009 11:01:29 | Currently, the only way RPGA-legal way to pick and choose from all available domains is to take the Fickle Servant feat. There are no rules that allow choosing "aspects" of deity in the current version of the RPGA CCG. |
| #3Madfox11Oct 12, 2009 4:05:17 | Why doesn't Sune fit well with avengers? She is the godess of beauty, and she is all about protecting that beauty. The same is true for Ogma, but about protecting knowledge and sages. I think an avenger who sees it as her noble duty to gather lost lore from ruins and dangerous monsters as a great concept for an avenger of Oghma. |

The irony is that depending on the censure, intelligence may be a dump stat for an avenger, hehe. "Me gets smarty stuff for Oghma!" |

| #6kzachOct 13, 2009 5:26:21 | What about the rule that says you can worship a pantheon of deities and thus gain access to all the domains of the pantheon? Given that these are open rules and the intent seems to clearly point to being able to pick and choose your domain and divinity feats, I'm struggling to understand why these options wouldn't be legal in the RPGA. Is there a specific ruling within the RPGA that states you can't choose domains or divinity feats outside of one particular god's selection or from a pantheon? If there isn't a specific ruling stating such, then I'm not clear on why or even how someone would stop me from doing so. |

from the RPGA Character Creation Guide v1.9, page 8: "Characters that have a divine class or multiclass option must choose one (and only one) living deity for their character." so, no, you can't worship an entire pantheon and just take whatever domains you want. i understand that you really want those specific domains (bad enough to start two separate threads to the same end), but unless you're willing to be a changeling with the Fickle Servant feat, you're going to have to accept that there's not currently a way to do it. |
| #8kzachOct 13, 2009 5:38:39 | It's silly things like this that turn people off RPGA play. The amount of people I've tried to get interested but have been stopped cold by either the website or the RPGA bureaucracy I need three hands to count. |

this has nothing to do with bureaucracy or the website. i understand that you can't do exactly what you want, but i think you're making way too big a deal out of it. |

Yes it does. |

my mistake. i guess simply saying it does makes it so. oh wait... no, it doesn't. would you care to enlighten us with your reasoning on how you not being able to take these two domain feats (even though there has been an option to do so pointed out to you SEVERAL times) has anything to do with "bureaucracy" or the website? sounds to me like you simply chose not to read the character creation guide, tried to find any reason you could possibly find in order to achieve the mechanical benefits that you want*, and being shown that you can't have chosen to point to completely unrelated things as being flawed** in order to give the impression that your view is correct and the system that won't allow it is defective. of course, i may be wrong***.
* - for the record, i would have no problem allowing it if it were legal in LFR, as i really don't see any game breaking benefit gained from taking both of the feats. ** - they may indeed be flawed, but it has nothing to do with your complaint. *** - but i doubt it. |

| #14PauperOct 13, 2009 17:53:46 | I don't think the designers or the organizers of LFR are deliberately trying to hold back the 'cheese' of being able to use Overwhelming Strike as a basic attack with a +2 bonus to the damage roll. As noted, the Eberron deity Dol Dorn has both domains, so this is legal in at least one setting. I also don't see a really huge impact to 'bureaucracy' here, since the LFR character creation guide is barely a dozen pages of actual rules material, much of which can be ignored if you have access to the DDI Character Creator (which technically anyone reading this with access to a Windows OS does, at least for creating a new first-level character, via the demo program). I think the key question boils down to, "Are the developers of a given setting/campaign obligated to include every possible character option in that setting/campaign?" To me, the answer is pretty clearly 'no': allowing every possible option in every setting restricts the ability to distinguish between settings both mechanically and in flavor. (This seems to be the primary argument against allowing warforged in LFR, for instance.) There's also the question of how the LFR developers would create options not put together by the D&D developers, and thus what status those options would have in comparison to 'official' material. Given that the powers-that-be have been extremely open-minded about including non-FR material in the LFR game, particularly when it would be very simple to restrict that material, I guess I don't really see why the lack of this specific option should be considered a major problem, or an indication that the shared campaign is somehow flawed or being run in a high-handed, dictatorial manner. -- |

Actually, your example isn't quite. You can use it as a basic attack or get the +2 bonus to the damage roll. You're only allowed to use one modifier to an at-will at any single time: "If you have more than one domain feat associated with the same power, that power can benefit from only one domain feat at a time."(pg 108, Complete Divine) I think it is more of a 'I want my character to belong to a deity with the Str domain, because he's Strong for roleplaying purposes, but I have to have the basic attack granted by Power of Skill for optimizing purposes.' |
| #16gomeztooOct 14, 2009 8:11:30 | When you play in a specific setting, which uses specific dieties, which uses specific domains, then there are limits in choices. Some think that is retricting, others feel it adds flavor - or, at least, makes choice valid beyond 'what are the best stuff to have'. Regardless, the setting does not offer this combo of options. I wouldn't lament it. I advise to just look for a deity that fits your character idea (in concept, outlook, or portfolio), rather than the deity that gives you the best bonus stuff. I.e. I choose Tempus because I wanted an unaligned, war-like paladin (one with a bit of gray, which fit the idea that she is a half-drow). I didn't choose her for the feats (the Tempus feat came after I had played her at GenCon UK). I choose Sune becasue my tefling is a hotty that needed a Matron deity that would look apst her (many) sins just because he looks good, I choose Tymora for my invoker because she is a risk-taker and a gambler, and Mystra (backed by Selune fro any game-rules) for my wizard because she has a crush on Elminster. Choosing deities that way make, for me, a much more satisfactory choice. Gomez |

Actually I believe that Tempus was not given the Skill domain because the designers deliberately didn't want to give that feat the the dude already offering the righteous rage feat. Not only get RRoT but also an improved Melee Training? As if we need even more avengers of Tempus It's silly things like this that turn people off RPGA play. The amount of people I've tried to get interested but have been stopped cold by either the website or the RPGA bureaucracy I need three hands to count. Actually that's not an RPGA thing at all. The FR have always been strict in regard to worshipping deities. The FRCS had setting specific rules in place that disallowed worship of multiple deities or abstrac concepts even in 3.x while the 3.x core rules allowed these
