Confused about "found" item slots

I played my first LFR game ever the other day, and at the end of the adventure we were given the choice of a couple magic items, a pack of rituals, or some gold.

I chose a magic item — one that was too high level for me to use but I know it will be useful in the future. However I noticed a few people taking the gold instead. My question is: does the extra gold they chose use up their 1/level slot of items?

We were all rushed at the end of the adventure to get out the door, so I really didn't think about what I was doing and now I worry I've used up my magic item slot and if I get an item I can actually use in my next adventure, I'm out of luck.... if I had chosen the gold instead would I have a free slot for a magic item?

I would recommend reading your Character Creation Guidelines v1.8.

For your specific question please read Page 8 and Page 9

Only magic items take up your found item slot for the level. Rituals, potions, gold, etc. do not.

See Dragon9 now how do you expect people to learn these things if you just give them the answer. :D

Yes, you would have kept the slot open for a magic item, had you taken the "more gold" option.

It's always going to be a dilemma you'll have to weigh at the end of an adventure, if you have an open found-item slot: do I take one of these, or do I keep the slot open for something even better in the next module?

The good news is that it's very likely that you'll only be "stuck" in your next adventure. Unless your group doesn't get anywhere close to full XP in at least one of your first two adventures, you're pretty much guaranteed to make 2nd level by your 3rd adventure (maybe the second adventure if you play an Adapated or Special). And, at that point, your second found-item slot will be there.

As a general rule, expect to be gaining a level (and, thus, a new magic-item slot) every 3 adventures or so.

Another thing to keep in mind is that, in 4E, compared to 3.x, having a large number of magic items isn't that important. It's important for you to get your hands on the following (and, as you go up in level, getting better versions thereof):
- A magic weapon (or implement if you're a caster; a few classes / builds, such as paladin, benefit from having both)
- Magic armor
- Something in the "neck slot", which gives bonuses to your non-AC defenses

Other magic items, while useful, are likely to not be as important for you.

Sheesh... I catch flak for saying RTFM and then I catch flak for not saying!

Sez you!

My wizard had in the hundreds of magic items back in LC, hoarded them obsessively. Lost em all in the Spellplague, and wants them back.

There's a empty spot in her heart where all the magic is missing. Sometimes, she cries at night.

LOL!

Well, then, let's draw a distinction between mechanical importance and psychological dependence. :D

Depending on the class you've chosen, and the adventure your playing, you might not actually find a magic item that suites your character. For example if your character is a shaman, the first level adventures don't usually have magic totems. But as more lower end adventures get added, they will be added as well. You are probably fine right now just keeping what you have.
