Anyway, I want to create a wizard, and for a background I thought I'd choose Halrua, but I see that it's been devastated and abandoned because of the Spell Plague. And that gives me some interesting ideas for a character who clings to lost national heritage. BUT, is there any canon on where Halruan refugees wound up? Are there any Halruan ex-pat communities out there? Luruar and Netheril seem like two reasonable choices, and I could always pick them, but are there existing groups of Halruans out there whom I could join? Thanks, MSD |

The "biggest" group of refugees are followers of seven wizards who flew (flee, flew? sometimes i hate english^^) into the Underdark. They have a trade road to East Rift, so that would be a possible background. If you have access to the Campaign guide read the section about Great Bhaerynden. 2. The Five Companies. These are mercenary companies with skyships operating from near Halrua. |

So, for a character background, I'd take "East Rift" for the first. Do you know which would be appropriate for the mercenary option? Grinninfoole |

You're looking at this the wrong way... sure many of the Halruuan refugees fled to the underdark (with East Rift background)... However, others fled elsewhere. Now they have had 100+ years to naturalise and so can have any of the Realms as a background. All you need to do is decide to dress and act like one of the ancient Wizards of Halruua. You can study them, go on adventures to find out more about them... you can even claim to be one of them (perhaps awakened from suspended animation, having escaped the spellplague, perhaps somewhere in Netheril or Thay), most people won't know what you are talking about, but you can sure make the claim... Another thread here was in a similar vein... that being "I want to play a Red Wizard of Thay"... you can sure make all the claims you want about your character, as long as you are not trying to claim any mechanical benefit or roleplaying advantage through your choice, then anything is possible. Just on one point, many DMs will be a bit circumspect about any character who claims to be a member of a specific "new canon" group (in this case "The Five Companies"). The LFR campaign world is only new and we do not know which groups will require campaign documentation in order to join ( Show we already know that "The Flaming Fists" do |
