Magic Item oops! Stuck with useless Greaves?

Apr 13, 2009 14:54:20 Game night is in 6 hours, so I'm trying to figure this out before I get there:
Last adventure, my level 2 Shaman took the Dwarven Greaves bundle. In the frenzied item lookup during bundle selection, I missed that the Greaves are a level 7 magic item, thus my level 2 Shaman cannot use or even sell them until level 3, which is still 2 adventures away. I'd like to get a magic totem before tonight's adventure, and I'm about 100 GP away. Is there anything I can do? Can I give the Greaves to a higher level character in the party who can sell a level 7 item, and split the money?
If I'm stuck with the Greaves until 3rd, I can live with that, I was just wondering if there's a way to fix my mistake before that.

Apr 13, 2009 15:00:46 Ask your DM nicely. If you are only ~100GP, ask your DM if you can 'buy' the totem before the start of the adventure but not pay for it until the after gold is awarded at the end. After all, the bookkeeping works out the same. If you ask polite, many DMs would be fine with it. Otherwise, I'd suggest you play this one adventure without the totem and buy it afterwards with the reward gold.

If he hasn't, just see if he'll let you change your choice before he sends in the results.

Actually, even if he HAS sent in the results, since your paper records trump the online records, just ask if he'll let you change the choice in your log sheet.

You haven't played another adventure yet, so I don't think it'd be a problem.

You shouldn't get penalized just because you were rushed for time.

Apr 14, 2009 0:40:32 Barring the DMs giving you a break, to answer your question: No, you can't give the item to someone else because you can't receive gold or treasure from another player. You would be stuck with them and able to use or sell them once you hit 3rd. They would still take up one of your found magic item slots.

After the next adventure you would be able to buy the totem with your treasure. Hopefully one of the DMs will be kind.
