| #1Dragon9Jan 16, 2009 23:37:12 | So I have this character... she's a retread of one of my LG characters. She is a rogue, but has visions from her god that ask her to do the dirty work his/her church can't get their hands dirty doing. She is touched also by her god (in 3.X she eventually took levels in Favored Soul for being "touched," in 4e she will multiclass Paladin... but that may change to Invoker as it fits somewhat better thematically). Anyway, I was in Veluna, so her God was Rao, god of Peace, Reason and Serenity. But the church had it's hawks and doves. So it fit well. I am having a hard time finding a similar God in FR. I think at this point Helm may be the closest. I don't know as much about FR gods, so if anyone has any insight, i would be happy to hear it. (I may need to post this in the Realmslore forum also) |
| #2kenobi65Jan 17, 2009 0:15:13 | Hmmm...I'm not a real expert on FR gods, but I have been DMing in the Realms (a 3.5 game) for a while. Helm is dead now (killed by Tyr, though it sounds like it may have been engineered by Cyric), and, so, not such a great choice. You're right, I can't think of a real direct analog to Rao in the FR pantheon. About the closest I can think of is Ilmater. |
| #3pint_glass_crusaderJan 17, 2009 8:32:01 | Ilmater or perhaps Sune... |
| #4Keith53Jan 17, 2009 8:40:38 | Was the portfolio of Rao important to you or the contrast or both? You might consider Oghma (knowledge), Chauntea (life), Sune (beauty), Milil (song), or Angharradh (wisdom). I think each of those have aspects which you could work with as Mr Fix the Problem. Or just go with Tymora, a favorite of many adventurers. Keith |
| #5SYBJan 17, 2009 9:52:06 | It sounds to me like you are looking for a good god with a side of bad boy. The best choices for this are dead as a doornail (Mystra) and changed his ways to a soulless, emotionless husk (Kelemvor). Lathander used to be what I like to call "Lathander Good". Good was defined by what he considered best and all others were therefore evil. This had him sending even his Paladins on pretty sketchy quests. Depending how much of Lathander is still in Amaunator, Lathander may be a good choice. Sune might be a good choice. She tends to put beauty above all else and will do some highly unethical things to defend it. Tymora is also reasonable. She is mostly a goody-two-shoes, but definitely slips when specifically countering gods that she hates (Beshaba specifically). My best recommendation would be The Red Knight. She is a warrior with a true warrior's mindset: Fight with skill and efficiency. Fight to win. Losing is not an option. Her followers should be lawful good, but tend to have an "ends justify the means" philosophy. If good came of your actions and the Red Knight didn't interfere, it must have been a good and lawful action. -SYB |
| #6Dragon9Jan 17, 2009 10:30:17 | Well, not so muchthat the God has a bad boy side... Rao was never prtrayed as having a bad boy side, just that his followers knew that sometimes peace only comes at the end of a sword. Her visions and "missions from God" were her backstory. And I thought Tyr was dead and Helm was still alive... *flips thorugh book* oh... I was thining of Torm. Althoguh reading about him... his followers already sort of do what she would be expected to do (the dirty work so to speak). Hmm... maybe Sune would be a good... it kind of fits her personality otherwise. @ Keith: It was sort of the contrast. The fact that the Raoan church had those more miltaristically inclined heped with that too. You had the peacniks and those who felt conflict was the way to ensure peace. Whiel they squabbled, she slipped in and put a knife to someone's throat... problem solved. So that's sort of what I'm looking for. There really isn't a god of Peace in FR. Torm sort of fits since he is noted as being the most civilized of the Gods and the most civilizing force. Which makes him a front runner as well. |

| #8Madfox11Jan 19, 2009 5:57:31 | I would say that Amaunator is probably the closests fit. He is a lawful good god of the sun, law and to a lesser extent reason and his behaviour does fit Rao to some extent (certainly more so then with Pelor). He still remembers his "youth", and has a soft spot for the young that constantly challenge themselves, try new things and go on adventures to do the good things (sometimes forgetting the law). It is the Lathander in him. Don't expect much support from the more conservative members of the church though ;) Sune, the godess of beauty and love, and Ilmater, god of healing and martyrdom, also are peace loving gods who go out of their way to help the weak and defenseless. Their followers also contain a more militant order who do dirty work to protect the interest of the deities. In 3E Sune (a chaotic good goddess) actually had a paladin order devoted to her. |

I always imagined that Sune would have a cadre of pretty potent Paladins... Sune's Channel Divinity feat power [Touch of Sune] is also pretty strong, having uses in and out of combat... and the Paladin/Heartwarder/Chosen of Sune progression for Sune worshippers has great flexibility, adding a bit of control [encounter domination; daily push/daze damage link] to the Paladin's Defender/Leader role. On-the-other-hand... Paladins of Ilmater don't have a specific paragon path, so they are limited to the normal PP for Paladins... however, the Paladin/Hospitalier/Chosen of Ilmater is the most thematic path. |
| #10Dragon9Jan 19, 2009 9:14:42 | Well, the dilemma I am facing, ultimately is this: In 3.X, other than being a Favored soul and sayign she was the letf hand Rao... she was a Master Thrower. Daggermaster fits her well thematically... but he idea of being touched by her god and Paragon Multiclassing is attractive as well. It's a hard decision... |

Yeah, under 3.x FR, Sune was allowed Pallies. They still had to be LG to her CG, but it was allowed. It really hurt the brain to think of how they could be Lawful to her Chaos, but hey their armor sure was pretty! I guess sometimes you just need to wield a beatstick to make sure the poetry gets done. |
| #12KarmaInfernoJan 19, 2009 17:03:42 | They tended to wear the most heavy armor available, to better protect their perfect bodies. Battle cry was, "Not in the face!" :D -karma |

| #14Dragon9Jan 20, 2009 9:17:57 | Porn for the porn G... wait... wrong setting... The Order of the Ruby Rose (the fighters/paladins/bards who serve Sune) coudl fit somewhat... althugh the visions that mark you as a member of the order are ones voluntarily sought after. So it doesn't quite fit. But close. From the suggestions here I will agree that Amaunator is probably the closest and Helm is probably second. So thanks for the input everyone! |

| #17theblackflailJan 20, 2009 22:27:01 | Porn for the porn G... wait... wrong setting... Helm is still a corpse, floating in the Astral sea, though. Eldath was the FR goddess of peace (way more peaceful than Rao ever was), however she has fallen of the face of Abeir-Toril, with nary a trace. |
| #18Dragon9Jan 21, 2009 8:07:28 | GAH! I mean Torm! Dammit... :P For some reason I go to type Torm, and my fingers type Helm. I don't know why. |
| #19gomeztooJan 21, 2009 9:01:54 | You are probably just channeling Beshaba. I personally like Sune. I have a PC ('Samantha') that 'works' for her (rather reluctantly), and is considered a Rose, even though nobody is currenty aware of it. I think of Sune as someone who believes she sees 'a bigger picture' - and therefor is willing to make some questionable choices, specifically in who her champions are, and what she allows them to do. She is more likely to believe that a person who is beautiful from the outside, has more potential to be good from the inside - which of course can lead to bad decisions. |
