PHBII Characters: Who will you be playing?

So, the PHBII becomes legal in LFR today I believe.

I've only seen the class previews so far (my book's in the post), so I'm not 100%, but I think I'm either going to pick a Barbarian or an Avenger for my first PHBII build. I like the flavour of both, and a reckless, two hander-wielding maniac will make a nice change from my other characters.

Initially I thought I might go for a Druid, to round out my list (primal controller to go with martial defender, divine leader and arcane striker), but the powers in the preview article left me cold.

Who's going to be your first PHBII character?

I'll probably flesh out the two builds I've been rhuminating upon all morning...

A Goliath Warden and a Tiefling Swordmage/Bard (for some snazzy Songblade implement action).

Having just made 3 custom Tiefling models this morning and undercoated a custom Goliath, I don't know which one to pick... I'll probably decide after I paint them... :D

Weighing towards the Gnome Bard atm. Totally focussed on skills and providing bonuses to others. Although I love the Avenger and the Invoker as well. Playing an Avenger in another game

I've started sketching out a Deva Invoker (mechanically, still need to pick a Deity and work on the backstory)

I'm thinking of picking up a sorceror as well. . . except for the fact that my main is already an Arcane Striker (Feylock).

But. . . wild magic! Soooo tempting.

Half elf Avenger Or deva avenger. Deva avenger seems more thematical but its damage is lower than that of a two handed fighter (Not TW!) The only time it would shine is against undead which would be nice but it seems cooler to build the avenger similar to assasains in assasians creed.

My secondary choice would be barbarian because smash things is never boring.

I'm already playing a Minotaur Barbarian. I'm planning on building a Shaman as the other character from PHB2, but fully expect to build one of each at some point. (whether I get to play them all is another story :D)

Bard, for sure. I played the gnome bard in a slot zero of the Game Day module, and she totally rocked. No idea yet as to race; I won't be getting my PHB2 until Saturday.

My Barbarian is already level 8, but I'm very excited about the rebuild (and the extra point of AC) in my future.

I've also already built a Sorcerer and a Warden for replay and new 1-4 mods. Since I only play Warforged PCs (although I'm tempted by half-orcs I'll stay true to my calling), these are a couple of really good classes for me.

I also have a level 2 Bard that I like a fair bit, and who will already benefit from the rebuild options.

The other classes don't really do it for me at this time, at least not enough to build and play at the expense of playing some other PC.

Most likely dwarf invoker/druid, leaning towards druid...

PHB2 is *very* dwarf-friendly... it's about time!

I've already got a Tiefling Bard 6. I've actually started up a Half-Elf Rogue for kicks(Twin Strike as an at-will at 11th)

I like what I've seen from Shaman, but I don't really have a primary striker, so that might mean I play a Sorcerer if I like some of their other abilities.

Dwarven invoker sounds good. But since I already have three dwarves (fighter, ranger, warlord) in LFR, I might opt for a goliath who is aligned with the dwarves. :D

Probably a barbarian or warden. I haven't had a closer look at the second.

I already have a level 7 minotaur barbarian who will very much enjoy his rebuild.

Of course all of my characters will be picking up weapon expertise (stupid band aid fixes for system flaws).

Deva Avenger, I think the avenger's "lower" damage output is highly mitigated by the oath of enmity, they should rarely miss if done right, add Deva roll booster, and reroll cards etc and it gets even crazier. I'm thinking Amaunator as a deity.

The issue with Avenger is not miss chance. The issue is what happens when you can't isolate your oath target or you realize someone else is more important.

Heh, Righteous rage is tempting yeah, especially with a 9w attack and d12 weapons at 29, but yeah.

And Refocus Enmity the level 2 utility is probably my choice in case I get the oops wrong guy going on.

I suppose at times it will be hard to get the enmity effect to work right, but against solo's it will be fantastic, and there are times on my rogue that I just can't get CA either.

I just think the avenger will be an interesting class to play, I really can't see any reason to not go leather armor or even hide for the class.

Thinking Retribution.

The double roll almost compensates for probably not being able to get the 19-20 crit feats due to stats, since you'd crit 9.75% of the time when you get to double roll. If you are able to get the 19-20 crit range though you jump to a 19% crit chance, and if for some crazy reason you multiclass and get in on daggermaster you can get 27.75 crit rate =) Though I think the class would be gimped using a D4 weapon, maybe the silly crit chance would compensate, but I doubt it, though most likely you'd be comparing a D12 weapon with 9.75 crit vs a D4 weapon with a 27.75 crit rate... Any numbermonkeys want to try to figure that one out?

Possibly the highest DPR builds around are half-elven(twin strike as dilettante) avengers armed with daggers. Bloodiron property is sick when you crit every other round...

And you don't even have to sacrifice Wisdom to do it - the original build started with an 18 in Str, I pointed out that most of the damage was from crits, so he lowered Str to 14 as a starting point.

It only took 7 hp of damage off the build(out of 300+ per round...)

I don't really think RRoT is that great of a feat for Avengers - their channel divinity options are really strong, especially the make your friend roll twice. You really can use that every combat and it roughly represents a +5 to hit for your friend's big encounter or daily power...

Not sure why =) I said it's tempting, I"ll probably be using a mace or hammer to utilize a crusader's weapon if I go with Selune. Or if I do choose amaunator a fullblade/sunblade then holy avenger at high level. I've got the character built I'm just not sure which god, I may or may not even take the channel divinity feat because the avengers is already pretty decent.

I don't want to just be a random avenger of tempus like so many others will be, I'm even considering Sune. I could have a battle cry "In the name of Love!" before I splatter some bad guys head =)

I've been playing a multiclass-centric "I can do everything" Half-Elven Bard for a while now. He's ridiculously fun to play, and the new options in PHBII are just going to make him even better. I'd been saving all my gold in anticipation of this book, and went a little crazy buying him new all sorts of new rituals, musical instruments and other shinies. "Student of the Seven" here I come!

If I need to create a third character I've been thinking about either a Dwarven Druid or Shaman. From Elfharrow. :D

Heehee. I had a druid in LC that would occasionally eat the bodies of enemies that she didn't want to see get raised.

She was, er, 'special' in a few other ways as well. Living the first decade of her life being raised by wolves in the wild probably had something to do with it.

I'm seriously considering taking the druid MC feat for my bard just cos it gives you Wild Shape.

Meet Gregor, Half-Orc Bard from the lands of Chessenta. Gregor's Thunderous Baritone voice pushes his allies to greatness and strikes fear into the hearts of his enemies.

I intend for Gregor to multi-class into Paladin (of Oghma) and Barbarian. At 8th level he will power swap his lvl 6 utility for Wrath of the Gods. Combined with his Bastard Sword Songblade, he will be an offensive force like no Bard before him. Currently I have re-fluffed all his power to be lines from famous songs. He sings them a capella and with a different melody, more suiting of a Bard.

This weekend my orc bard established that performance screaming is the only proper orc vocal art.

Sometimes you can scream to drums and other loud discordant instruments, but if anyone can actually make out what you are screaming, you're doing it wrong.

Screaming an entire field of minions to death was satisfying. (shout of triumph)

Taking a Spiked Shield as a songblade eventually, probably. Til then he uses a waraxe and wand (microphone)

I am the swiftness of the wolf pack.
I am the fury of the storm.
I am the whisper of a ripple on a still mountain lake
Or the wind howling through the trees.
I am the quiet strength of the ancient oak.
I am the majestic eagle soaring over her domain on gold-tipped wings.
I am the fieldmouse skittering through the sun-soaked fields.
I am the owl gliding on wings of night.
I am the mother grizzly, passionately protecting her cubs with teeth, claws, and, if necessary, the very essence of her life.
I am the panther, patiently stalking her prey, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Waiting to slash out with lightning speed and deadly precision.
I am the venom of the spider.
I am the agility of the monkey, swinging skillfully through the treetops.
I am the supple willow, weeping over a gently meandering stream.
I am the enduring rock, resisting centuries of relentless wind and rain.
I am the biting cold that seeps deep into your bones.
I am the vermin and the scavenger, given the sacred task of completing the cycle of life and death.
I am the wings of the butterfly, lifting it gently from flower to flower.
I am the rich warm soil, giving moisture and nutrients to all that grows and flourishes on the forest floor.
Within me dwells the raw energy of a thunderstorm.
I am the gentle kiss of a raindrop and the gale-force winds of a hurricane.

***********************************

Your hideous cities obliterate the natural order.
You **** the land of its resources,
Forcing the earth to give more,
Always more.
You rip grain from its surface
Only to let it rot in dank, dark silos.
You raze forests to the ground.
What semblance of nature you let live is twisted, distorted, and corrupt,
Only a shadow of the beautiful thing it once was.

You draw lines in the dirt, and buy and sell the very Earth Herself.
You build cages for the beasts of the earth and sky.
You confine certain plants to small, neat, cultivated gardens,
Restrict their growth
And root out other plants as "weeds."
Nature cannot thrive in a box.
She cannot be sold.

Like your domestic, fattened pigs,
You eat more, more, ever more.
Your bodies have the nourishment and energy they need to survive,
And yet you demand more.

You kill our wolves for feeding on your fat and lazy livestock.
What gives you the right to declare ownership over a living thing and decree who can eat what?
That is not the way of the natural world.

You hunt the beasts of the forest for fun,
To satisfy your insatiable bloodlust.
You puff out your chest and speak with pride of the wild beast you cunningly stalked and slew.
But no. The forest knows the truth of your "bravery."
The trees witness the traps you set, hear the crude snapping of bones and the cry of outrage and agony.
The wind carries the sounds of your victim's slow, painful death and the mewling of the cubs as they circle helpless around their mother.
But you hear none of those sounds - the only sound you hear while you are safe and warm in your "den" is the false, hollow laughter of your associates.
You do not see the cubs nudging her still form, or curling up next to her cold body,
Hopeless, alone, and afraid.
All you see is your prize trophy head or the cold, lifeless glitter of gold.

You do not know pain.
You do not know life.
All you know is gluttony, lust, and greed.
You do not know the thrill of running with the wolf pack,
You do not know the raw energy of a storm.
All you know is thoughtless destruction.

You are an affront to all that is living, beautiful, and good in this world.
Your cities **** and abuse the earth until She can give no more.
Then, like a plague, you move on,
Searching for new lands to despoil.
Behind you leave a charred empty wasteland.
Nothing can be sacred or pure there again.
In your wake you leave a torrent of destruction.

Enough!!!!!

We have sent our Guardians of the Earth to speak of your wanton destruction,
But you have slaughtered them, for you fear what you do not know.
It seems that the only language you understand is ruthless bloodshed.
Well, I need to speak to you, and I am a quick learner.
We have tried words.
Perhaps you will listen to claws and rage and teeth.

Dark storm clouds build, roiling on the horizon.
We have waited and suffered long.
The tempest rages in raw, primal fury.
There will be harmony after the cleansing rain.

Well, ended up never using Red Cheese of Tempus on Saturday.

I ended up using the second CD in every fight, because my teammates can't roll to hit. (Although my Invoker could hit my FORT perfectly well. If only he'd hit the minion. 4 damage and slow didn't bother me, or the already slowed OoE target, all that much.)

Although, the second time I used it, Our Paladin, the moronic Jet Dominic, rolled a 20. So hey.

Also: Iron Chains of Binding is SWEET. Watching every enemy on the battlefield slow was great. He also hit all but one enemy. (somewhere around 15 enemies overall.)

. . .

It's the stuff you walk on - under your feet. "Guardians of the Earth" is an adventuring company - guardians sent to protect the earth. Caps for proper noun.

Shouldn't that be Guardians of Toril? Or Guardians of the Loam? It really shouldn't be called earth...

or earth elementals....

earth is an element in D&D

Earth is our planet.

Honestly the biggest problem is that as a species the best name we could come up with for our own planet was to call it "dirt" erm I mean Earth... even though it's over 2/3 water....

Go figure.

I seriously considered playing a Bard for a very short amount of time. I thought to myself "Who wouldn't want to play a class who's ultimate level 29 attack is called Hero's Bacon?"

Then I looked again and realized it was Hero's Beacon.

Then I was sad.

So far, I've got the following PHB2 characters:

Drizzo - Ranger from the underdark, wielding dual scimitars and summons a companion with a figurine of wondrous power. He's a Gnome. Fun to play, even though the Gnome's stats don't match anything important to melee rangers. Currently 6th level.

Mirriam - Avenger. An Impilturan human teenager that swore an oath to Tempus to avenge her farming family that was slain by demons. Tempus answered and granted her a Fullblade that is possessed by a spirit of battle, forcing her to combat and drives her to quest under its direction. Currently 6th level. Very fun to play. So far, I've avoided the tempus channel divinity feat.

Garund - Dwarf Sorcerer from Iltkazar of Old Shanatar. Having studied under the dragon king Mith Barak, he is now determined to acquire aid and resources in the world above to help his city state. Currently 2nd level.

Having fun with the PHB2 options so far.

I agree.

I went with Akanul, becasue I'd already created an (unused) Warforged Beastmaster(Spider) Ranger from Impuilitir.

And I felt like something different. Granted, I DID takt the Red Ring of Tempus, but I never actually used it in the first adventure. The CD for giving your teammates an extra roll was too useful.

I think I figured out how to play a witchalock (without the april fools writeup)...

Warforged Bard + Shaman (multi)

A warforged is both yet neither sex. (wears the skin of an elf (bluff) so he looks "normal" (other than the glowing red eyes.

Bard allows the unlimited multiclass (so I can pickup themed powers.. and has alot of powers that seem to fit rather well).

Stats: 13... (all the way down).. 16 = charisma
- this qualifies for ALL multiclass feats.

Shaman allows me to summon a "Wolf-olock" spirit.

.. later.. pick the enchanted daggers that split into 2.. and call them witchalock blades.

I can't remember the rest of it.... but I will work it out by the time Arcane Power is released.

Ok the name kinda sucks, but that was what the called her in her secluded druid circle, cut of from civilization on the Nelanther Isles.

I love her trick; run up to mobs predator's fury, and then charge a third mob with pounce, for a whooping 1d8 + 1d6 + 11 damage. Must be cool to see, a black panther jumping all over the battlefield.

While the Tempus feat is nice with an Avenger, their channel divinity option that allows another member of the party to roll twice is really strong.

I've ended up playing the following characters so far:
A Luskan Human Wild Magic Sorceress/Rogue who is a nasty piece of work.

A Narfell Half-Elf Valor Bard who acts like a Barbarian. She prefers to never use ranged attacks.

A Thayan Tiefling Cunning Bard who believes himself to be human cursed to look like a Tiefling. Has the same last name as one of the human overlords of Thay. Done before PHB II came out.

A Deva Shaman/Invoker whose past selves were responsible for half the atrocities on Faerun - she wasn't the prime motivator, so she didn't get Rakhasha'd, but.... So any time a mod mentions some distant historical fact, she sighs sadly and apologizes for her past life's behavior.

The only time I ever want to see Righteous Rage of Tempus used is with a Deva divine PC using the Shared Channeling feat from the Ecology of the Deva article to give another PC the RRoT effect. I think that will be pretty cool

I play a gnome cunning bard (he's a hero-trainer and promoter), a dragonborn thaneborn barbarian, and a dwarf invoker for PH2 classes. Pretty fun stuff.

Seriously though, so many divine characters are worshipping Tempus just because of that channel divinity feat that when I created the character and her backstory fit Tempus (and Impiltur was chosen for the backstory of demonic slaughter of her family, not the regional feature), I was really reluctant to take it because everyone else does. Also, as someone pointed out, letting a party member reroll their Daily attack on my oath target is not too shabby either.

There really is less and less reason to min-max characters in this edition I've found. Tactical skill at the table plays a much greater factor than any build.

Oh, and I just created a new Bard character today. He's a melee Bard and I'll probably play him more as a striker.

Isn't that your 3.5 Bard?

That's what my Bard who acts like a Barbarian does. With Combat Virtuoso, it works out pretty well once you hit around 6th. Avenger, Class with a big swing power at 3rd level, Combat Virtuoso, and Novice Power(for the big swing power)

Heh.

Strangely enough, this particular bard was last seen in the Pale, at a chicken farm just outside of Ogburg, investigating some strange planar confluence...

There are so many different ways to take Bards that it's entirely feasible to have an all Bard table. Hmm...I might have to convince some folks to start new characters...

I am playing a witchalock... No not the April fools article..

Cunning Bard (16 char.. 13 everything else) currently lvl 2
Warforged (wearing leather) skinned from a slain elf..Gentle repose keeps it "fresh" (using bluff to disguise myself as that elf)... the arcane goggles give me the night vision (keep them under the elf skin)...
I don't have my witchalock blade yet..
embeded instruments into my limbs so when I use slayers song.. my theme song starts up.. and a punch somebody.. then proceed to use cutting works to pull & grant combat evasion...
So far I have multiclassed Warlock(infernal) & warlord (so I can be more awsome..)..

Everybody seems to like the character.. so far noone has had a high enophe passive perception to see through my disguise..
